Please critique this shot - looking forward to your replies.
Would you crop more tightly on this one?

Thanks,

KO,

That is a great close-up of a prairie dog. How did you get him to pose for the shot? :D

When I viewed the original size image, it became evident that a large lens opening was used, creating a very shallow DOF. The nose is in sharp focus, but the rest is fuzzy. I would try for greater DOF next time.

Your cropping looks good. Maybe cropping a little tighter would improve, but it looks good as is. I wouldn't change it too much.

for me the only problem is the softness of the subject, it looks as though the focus point is slightly more to the front of the picture, the log looks pretty sharp. Was this cropped from a larger image?
I really like the colours and comp. however.

Quite a pose isn't it? I just saw it and snapped it so it was quite a lucky shot - he didn't stay there for more than a few seconds.

For this shot I had a 55-200mm lens on the camera, which has a max aperture of F4. I knew I wouldn't have time to change for my 50mm F1.8 which would have given a greater DOF, and the overall lighting was quite poor so I pretty much had to make do.

This image was taken as is - no cropping as yet.

Thanks for your comments guys :D

I feel like only the nose is in focus, while the rest is not quite blurred, but soft.

Haven't decided if I like the effect yet... :D
