Hi there , i was given a ixus500 by a friend and i've found that theres something rattling inside the camera , it sounds like a controlled rattle almost like a ball bearing , the camera works fine so i was just wondering if it was meant to be there , any help would be great

It's likely that this is the switch/sensor that determines which way up your camera is, when taking photos. (Notice that the pics are always the right way up when you look back at them, regardless of which way you held the camera ?)
Try holding the camera normally as if you were going to take a photo, then turn it 90 degrees in a contolled fashion and you should hear the noise.

Yes I too had an Ixus 400 that rattled, even before I dropped it, I went back to Jessops where I bought it and we had a good listen to the "rattle", opened another couple of brand new ones in the shop and they were all the same.
My new 500 does it, replacement for the dropped 400 - it is definitely something to do with the sensor for automatic rotation in portrait mode, don't worry - Ps I like the fact you have a friend who gives you nice cameras by the way
All the best

The digital Ixus had been a good friend, and yes I think a reasonably rugged little camera, but I not only dropped it, I dropped it on a sewage works.
So as well as being broken, it was not too sweet either, cleaned up okay and in fact worked for the rest of that day, it was when I took the compact flash out, the door fell to bits and of course it will not fire without the door - so that is why I have the new 500 and I promise to be more careful with this one.
Glad I could bring a little joy - and now the pain is wafting into a distant memory, I can have a little laugh as well.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine, such wonderful pics out of something so small, but beautifully formed.
