I have been having a problem with my off camera TTL cord, every now and then the flash switches from ETTL to TTL and the exposures are messed up, usually way over exposed. If I disconnect the cord and attach the flash directly to the camera it goes back to ETTL. After a while I can put the cord back on and it works.
Has anyone else out there had this problem?

It would be helpful if you identify the Canon part number on the cord. It is probably marked on the plastic connector of one end. We just want to make sure that it is the correct one.
Then, which Canon camera is this on?

Make sure you are using the Canon "Off The Shoe Cord 2". That is the only one that will give you ETTL.

What camera and what flash are you using? All of the flashes that are 10D and E-TTL complient don't have TTL capability.
I've found that my flash - a 550EX - will slightly un-seat itself once in a while from the hot shoe in the Remote Cord 2. It'll look like it's in place but isn't, with the only clue being that I can see a little bit more of the flash's connector pins than I nomally do. The trick is knowing what's normal. Although the flash will fire, the exposure seems to be on full manual and the first few times I usually did my "What's happening? What's happening?" dance!

I was wrong, it's a "Promaster" Off-camera TTL cord which I purchased from the same camera store where I purchased the Digital Rebel.
I am using the Digital Rebel and a 550EX flash.
The flash will show ETTL but then shows TTL when the exposures go haywire.

This might be another study in how not to try to beat the Canon system.
The Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 costs about $50.

I don't understand what you mean by "TTL" since there is NO TTL with either the Drebel or the 550. Having said that, the cord is obviously the problem.

Spotted a used Promaster Off-Camera Cord and thought I'd scored a deal. I'm having the same problems using it with a Canon 20D and 550EX flash... it switches to TTL (not E-TTL) mode and the exposures go nuts, typically way over exposed. I'm guessing that perhaps this third-party cord is not fully compatible since my problems are indentical to yours. I might get a couple of shots in E-TTL mode before something wigs out and the flash displays just TTL. If I dismount the cord and put the flash directly on the camera hotshoe again, it goes back to E-TTL and all is good.
I'm hoping the camera store will take back this cord and I can trade up to the Canon Cord.
