OK, I'm in over my head. I've got a 1D and I installed a Firewire card in my PC tonight. I install the WIA driver from Canon as I have XP. After I do the install I hook up the camera and it opens the window in PS LE where I shoud be able to click and get access to the camera, but the only thing it'll do is let me open folders (the camera icon won't let me do anything). I can down load pictures from the camera, but I can do that from the card reader. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? TIA.

I'm just about in the same boat a newbe with a 1Ds.
I also had a problem with the firewire working. When I would click on the camera I would get some funky error about the camera not being connected.
Turned out to be the I-Pod software I had installed. Once I removed it I had no problems.
Do you have any other devices that are using the firewire connection?

Try using a card reader, might be more effective!

One problem using only a card reader, there are some functions that can only be set via the software and you have to have communcation directly with the camera to do that.

What can you do?

I'll assume that you are asking what can you do with the personal functions.
There is a wide range of different action.
- limit the max and min for the sutter speed or apature
- Set up repeated bracketing during continuous shooting
- Disable shooting or meetering modes
- Change the order that bracketing shots are taken
and on and on there are some 26 of them on the 1Ds and there are some others on the 1D

I may have found the problem. Evidently, if you have XP and you use the solutions disk as directed in the software instructions, it loads the Twain driver, which doesn't work for XP. So then I loaded the Wia driver directly from Canon's website. Well you can't have both loaded. I was tired, on call and on the phone with work; so I gave up. Tonight I'm going to reload the Wia driver and see if that works.
As far as down loading pictures, my card reader works great. It's fast, easy and with 2 one gig cards, I'm set.
The reason I want to hook up the camera is to change some settings as far as JPEG compresion and sharpness. I don't have anything else going through the firewire, so I think it's a software issue. I could also download pictures from the camera, but it was very slow; so I think the card is working.
BTW, I found a download for Canon's Digital Photo Professional. Has anyone used this? I might give it a try after I get this firewire stuff worked out.

Yes.. you need to load the WIA driver.. evryone needs to forget about TWAIN! (he was overrated anyways)

Then you can acces the personal functions in either of two ways.. right click on the camera Icon in "My Computer".. or from a menu slection in EFV (canon sofware)
