Close to you is Old Town Petersburg. Colonial Williamsburg is just east 30-40 miles on I64. Richmond is a short ride up I95, and has lots of different looks form old to new. The James River runs through Richmond, and looks real nice now with the water very low, and lots of rocks exposed. Google Pony Pasture Park, and bring the longest lens you have - you might see eagles, osprey, herons egrets, ducks, and girls sunbathing.

My girlfriend told me about Pony Pastures last week and I was googling it, but I couldnt find any information on google about it. She says that there are parts of it that you can slide off rocks into the water, swing off into water and stuff. Sounds cool, but I couldnt find much info on Google.

If you go, please be careful on the rocks - the underwater parts are very slippery. And wear shoes, there may be glass in the water. If you want to hike, stay on the trail closest to the water - you can go either direction from the parking lot. To get there use 7200 Riverside drive, Richmond, VA in the map program of your choice.

I grew up in Woodbridge, but bought a house a couple years ago in Ashburn. I still visit my parents all the time though.

There's a pretty busy thread for northern virginia people somewhere in here. Lots of nice parks and battlefields for photography, and obviously DC.
