Hi all,
I would like to get your opinion on having a Canon D30 as a backup camera for a 10D. I have a 10D but, would like to get a cheap backup camera and with the price of the D30 getting down to about $700 AUS I thought that it might not be a bad option.

Hi Chrisvw,
The D30 is a good camera so long as you realise that its only 3.25 mega pixels and that you will be pushing it fairly hard to get to A4 without resorting to interpolation. Having said that, its an excellent IR slr as it doesn't have such a strong IR filter as the later bodies have. Ok it's not handheld IR like the G3 but its still very good with a R72.
Best regards

..........how about a Rebel?? They should be the same price.....and it gives you the same 6 mp/image quality of your 10D.

While the Digital Rebel might be a newer similar cost alternative, the D30 will be more similar to the 10D in function and durability. The layout of the controls between the two cameras is very similar. When I purchased my D30, I could have bought a Dig Reb for a lower cost, but decided to go with the D30 due to its construction and overall "feel."
