View Full Version : How well do you know your camera?

I've been curious about this for a while...

Consider the list below. How many of these things can you do without removing your eye from the viewfinder?

Each line counts as one point.

Considering settings that aren't shown in the viewfinder (like ISO dammit!) you must *know* what you're changing it to. Don't take a point because you can change ISO, take a point because you can change ISO from 100 to 400 to 200 and know what you're at.

Change aperture or shutter speed
Change between Av Priority, Tv Priority, and Manual
Change ISO
Change Drive Mode
Change Metering mode
Change Auto Focus Mode
Change AF focus points
Change Flash Exposure Compensation
Enable/disable Flash
Use Depth of Preview button
Enable/disable AF on Lens
Adjust mono/tripod using it's controls (tilting a monopod doesn't count!)

Again, take a point for each line above, and vote.

Have any of you ever practiced chaging these things? Or do you just learn it as you go?

9 points here; I'm fairly used to my 10D and its controls, but limited use of my left hand makes some of the act rather tricky.

I did bad on this....
but then: My rebel can't change metering mode, can't change autofocus mode, can't change flash exposure compensation

I scored 5-7. I need a 20D :!:

Hmmm... I was aware that the Rebel didn't have FEC, but it doesn't have metering modes? Or AF modes?

Nope. :(
I'm talking about a pure, unhacked Rebel.

I mean it does have all those, but you can't select them manually.

but that doesn't necessarily translate to real world results.

I know the 10D inside and out and can use all controls with premeditation, planning, and perfect execution. I did practice considerably to make the camera's controls an extension of my eye/thought. I feel absolutely confident... until I see some of the photographs others post, and then I think "god, I've got a long way to go".

And, the 300D really doesn't allow you to select an AF point? that's surprising.

Yes it does. In P, Av, Tv and manual mode.

I scored a 6. But do I get an extra point for hitting the shutter button without looking? :D
