I am trying to photograph close up shots of coins with a Canon A40. I am in macro mode and am trying various backgrounds, but I am wondering what settings in the camera I should use and what layout of the shot is best. The results I get are either all white or too dark to read the coin details...Thanks!!

I'm going to assume that the problem here is proper lighting. Coins are shiny and you can end up with uneven lighting. I'd suggest you use the manual function on your camera and use the flash. You can also try using some incandescent lighting to light the coin from all sides to eliminate shadows and get even lighting. Set your iso and shutter speed accordingly.
