I have lots of swimming captures, but this is the first one that looks almost decent. This is my son doing his premier stroke - the breaststroke. I captured this with my 28-135. I keep telling Greta I 'need' a 70-200 2.8L IS USM so I can get better shots!

If you are allowed, get onto the deck and get DOWN to the level of the swimmers. The shots will be much better, in my opinion, particularly for breast stroke (here's one (http://turcophoto.com/photos/221942305-XL.jpg) I shot ). Of course that 70-200 2.8 is a help too.
You look like you're off to a good start though :)

Generally at school meets, only swimmers, coaches, and meet personnel are allowed on deck. This was taken at an 'away' meet, and I was denied access on deck. I'm waiting for some deck time at a home meet, cause you're right!
BTW - nice shot! Thanks for a great example.

Well you need deck time. That means that you need a white 70-200 2.8L. With this you can look like you are from the local paper. Just tell them "you left your credentials in the car. Didn't think you would need them for high school stuff". ;)
That white lens gets you in places you would not imagine.

I just made friends with my school's coach-- now I can go wherever I want without worry. Though it helps that I am with the local paper (ie the university paper).

hahah this really makes me want to trade my 70-300 for a 70-200 f/4

f/5.6 ey?
Definately not enough for these kind of events, saving up for that 70-200 2.8L would be a wise choice! you could also look at the 100mm 2.0, think that lens would do a good job too at swimming matches IF you get deck access...
The photo of Tsaraleksi is a really good example! try to get their face on and get down to their level.
And last, do some more post-processing on your pics, there's so much you can fix afterwards in photoshop! Quick edit on your shot (hope you don't mind?):

Not at all....looks great! All I have right now is DPP, and when I tried to brighten it a bit I got some wash out. Then again, I'm still at the bottom of the post-production learning curve.

Offer to shoot the entire team and the coach may let you down on the deck at home meets. For away meets, just tell the officals that you are the photographer for your team. Don't use a flash while down there and shoot from the end of the pool so you get their faces coming out of the water.

Swimming can get frustrating at times, but you got a very nice start for the angle and where you had to shoot from.
Shooting swimming for some time now, So far no one has stopped me from shooting from the deck at a HS meet, mainly because I don’t ask I just do. If you ask, they can say NO.
Never flash the starts, but after that give that flash a workout. Getting that big white lens as tsaraleksi and davidfig said will get you even better admittance.

I read the entire thread, not looking at the dates....
Then I scroll down to your current son's pic and it threw me for a loop! Great surprise, lol.
I see no 70-200 f2.8 in your gear list though :(
