Do you have an opinion on Flash for EOS 300D. I have Speedlite EZ430 with my old EOS 5 body, and I'd like similar performance from my next flash too. I thought the old flash would work on my digital body, which it does not do (why, oh why?)
I'd probably love the Canon 420EX or 550EX but how about the Sigma EF500 DG's or do you have better suggestions?
Thank you for your time,

If you want to be lazy, the 550ex is the way to go... I have not played with the sigma at all on the 300D but it will work...
I love my 500ex on my 300D though.. Somone chime in on the 580ex though.. Will it work on the 300D and then you can use it later if you upgrade to the 20D or higher? I know there was some discussion on how it was set up for the 20D and how it might not work on the 300D but was this ever found out to be true?
I'll tell you one thing though... 580EX, BIG MONEY!

Personally I think the 550EX is big money too! I bought the 500DG Super used and I like it. I would love to hear from people that have both to see their opinions. Here is a reply to Kenski from another thread:
How do you like that Sigma Flash.. I might pick it up for the wife and use it as a slave... Hmmm, can it be slaved by the 550ex? I'm sure it can...
I quite like it, it is a decent unit. There are a few differences between it and the 550EX. The 500DG can act as an optical slave where it fires when it detects light, I don't believe the 550 can. However, the 500DG is lacking the custom functions that let you set things like FEB for a whole series, with the 500 you have to set it manually every three shots. The 500DG is also missing the external battery pack plug.
It supposedly has the capabilities for acting as both a slave and a master, but I have not tried it out. Others here have and told me that it works well in those situations.

I really like the 550ex but like you said, I would like to take two rebels or two 10Ds and put a 550 on one and a 500 on another and just go to town.. That is how I messed with the 50mm 1.4 and 1.8... Some of those websites where they take a few pictures just didn't cut it for me. My wife and I went out and we took side by side pictures and the same settings and we noticed HUGE differences in the lenses.. That is why I went with the 1.4 USM... I'm sure you will notice differences in the 550 and the 500 but I don't think it is going to be in quality of the build or in the lens. I think it is going to be in ease of use and I think the 550 is going to edge out the 500.

Your 300D has ETTL as its primary flash mode. Speedlite 430EZ and any other xxxEZ do not do ETTL mode. The 430EZ is fine for an EOS 5 body that uses TTL mode.
For 300D you need anything xxxEX. That means mostly 550EX or 420EX.

What about the 580ex... Will all of its features work.... I know there has been some talk about it... If I would want to pick up the 580 and then later bump up to a 20D, will the 580 work on my 300D?

Well the 580EX was designed for ETTL II in mind, which the DRebel does not support, but I would doubt canon wouldn't make the 580EX backwards compatable with ETTL. So you would have to ask yourself, are you going to be upgrading camera bodies anytime soon enough to make the extra cost for features that you currently cannot use.
When the 580EX first came out it was literally 5 days after I got my 550EX, and my first reaction was "Sh%t!!!!" Then I thought about it, I will probably have my DRebel for at least 3 more years before I upgrade, so I really wouldn't have the need for the 580 after all.

Yup, that was exactly how I felt myself! I understood that it was ETTL II but didn't know if it would work or not on the rebel or not... Oh well.. I'm doing the Lenses before the camera first so who knows when the camera will get UPGRADED... The wifey doesn't like the whole money idea anyways... Something about it doesn't grow on trees or something like that...

Well as for trying out the 500DG Super, if anyone is in the Guelph, KW or GTA area and wants to try it out let me know. I won't lend it out but I will certainly let you bring a camera down and try it out.
