Looking at how deeply Canon is discounting 5D body currently (~$1300 after rebates, sell the kit lens and printer, etc.), and with another drop in 40D price ($1150), I am thinking that Canon must be planning to introduce new 5D for under $2000. I'm sure I'll be right on this one!!! :D

While that would be extremely nice, I highly doubt it. :)
THough if that is the case, a purchase is a no brainer.

That would be nice. I am planning to buy a second body and waiting to see if the next 5D is worth the additional cost over the current model. I need the 2nd body by the end of June. If no new 5D is out before that I will just pick up the current 5D (which by no means is a bad alternative).

Although I do not think it will sell for less than $2000, I do think it will not be much more than $2000. Canon may split 5D into two lines, a low resolution model (10-12MP) at about $2000, and a high resolution model (14-17MP) at $3200 (5D's introductory price). And my guess is that the low resolution model may be announced in January, and the sign for the high resolution model's announcement is the price drop of 1Ds Mk II (which is not happening right now).

I think it is possible.... For example when the 40d was released there was a time period when you could buy a 30d for a hundred dollars more and the 40d is clearly a better camera... If the pattern they follow is the new camera being priced at the lowest price point of it's predecessor then sure it is possible ... but having said that we don't know what they are doing/adding to a 5d replacement.
I personally feel if Canon was to release two new full frame cameras ("low res" & "high res") they would do small upgrades to the existing 5d.. kinda like the upgrades the 20d received to become a 30d and then they would do a more "advanced" FF camera in the $3500+ range so people won't complain that Nikon has better stuff and that Canon really dropped the ball on the upgrade and now they are switching to Nikon for sure.
It is really starting to seem like a lot of the "non-professional" everyday photographers are beginning to want to obtain a full frame camera that is reasonably priced without having to resort to buying a 5d that is "technologically on it's way out" or used.
I don't think full frame should only be reserved for pro's or people with extra money to burn... Like all technology I believe the day is very near when FF will be an option available to the everyday consumer. I believe the FF battle will come to an end and the lowest sensor noise, high ISO battle will begin.
It seems like the anticipated announcement of a new 5d is the only thing that keeps some people from sticking with Canon and I must admit I feel that way too.

If it was under 2K, they would sell tons of them. I think they'll do it ;)

The FF battle is over? It just started. There was virtually no competition before the D3. The High ISO/Low noise battle should be interesting though.

I think the only 20D-30D upgrade i remember was a larger LCD, kind of a dry hump. So I would hope it is more like the 30D - 40D for the smaller upgraded version.

Agreed.

They are obviously clearing out the 40D and the 50D will come out any day! My recommendation is to wait for the 50D and the 5Ds Mark III, when they'll be $499 and $699 respectively.

I don't know if that is the case, but I do agree about the great deal on the 5D. In my case, I wanted the 24-105 in the kit and also the Pro9000 printer, making my 5D effective cost after rebates close to $1200. So, for less than $2400, I purchased both the 40D and the 5D. Both of these could be replaced tomorrow, and I would not be sad at all.

Canon will price the new 5DII to compete with other full frame cameras. The new 5DII will be priced about same as new Nikon full frame, so you better buy an old 5D before the prices jump. Canon would be foolish to price a full frame much below Nikon's pricing. Expect new 5DII to be around $3,000 US for body only.

Hi Chandler...
What I meant is the FF battle will very soon come to an end. FF is no longer an exclusive feature found only in Canon slr's so they can't brag about it anymore.... IMO when that happens you have to find something new that makes you stand out over the competition and that will be great for us.

Sorry, but the 5D is not $1300, despite what you managed after finagling the rebates and selling the other items that are part of the rebate. I could just as easily say that the 24-105L is selling for $400 after sale of the 5D and printer, which wouldn't be correct either. I'm not saying you didn't get a heck of a deal on a 5D, but to characterize it as selling for $1300 is misleading and not in any way indicative of what the 5DII will sell for.

I agree, so I think more accurately, the FF monopoly is over and the battle is raging.

True. $2500 seems like a fair price for the successor.
