View Full Version : Common becomes uncommon

I spent the afternoon shooting chickadees again and wish to share some of the less "traditional" poses with a focus on action and strange poses as well as some perhaps more traditional wide angle shots with a focus on color and composition. Thank you for having a look at these common birds that I love to photograph so much.
All shot with Mark III on either 100-400 or 70-200 at ISO 1600

Big rush

I appreciated the background here so decided upon a wide angle crop

Snot nosed chickadee

The attitude of the bird is not traditional but I liked the result of the low light backfocus and the bird seeming to be almost meditating here

One more wide angle which I chose because I felt that the background was as important as the bird in this particular shot

Doesn't this prove that the Mk III is lousy and that we should rush out and sell ours?
Seriously, very cool pics!

Excellent shots, great detail and nice work in soft light... I especially love the wing pose in the 1st shot and the nice detail and clean b/g in the 5th shot.:)

Super shots, I love the last one. I also love the way you guys over the pond call these birds Chickadees. Over in the UK they are called TITS ;o) This one looks like our Coal Tit

Thanks, Tony, I certainly have no complaints with the camera, especially where I live, very low light conditions and darkness comes quickly, one of the major reasons I purchased the camera. I do believe that I received much more than anticipated and am quite pleased overall. Thanks for the compliment :D

Thanks Ruth, as always, thanks for having a look and leaving a note. The wing pose was one of my favorite attributes in the first shot, with tail down and wings up.

Thanks Julian, I do believe that we on the "other side" are a bit shy about calling anything a "tit" but that's just a guess. :D I've noticed the extreme similarity in posts from y'all in the UK as well, it's very interesting, indeed.
By the way, I like the format of your website, very simple to navigate, excellent photography.

Many thanks, Reed, one of my favorite things to do with these speed demons is to get a good clear action shot of them. I find that "burst" mode simply causes them to freeze on the twigs so it's a matter of practice and sensing when they are going to move (1%) and luck (99%) :D

great shots of great little birds
Thanks Sonic, I see that you have the Bigma in your rig set, I plan to do some 50-500 shooting soon with the Mark III. I've had that lens for years and it always seems to perform. Mine fell apart at the tube last year about this time when I was shooting these chickadees but I got it fixed up and plan to test it out soon. Love the variety of focal distance, very usable in shoots like this. Cheers.

Thanks kindly Stephen, glad you took a moment to comment. I'm new here in the area of posting, even though I have been a member for years. I'm extremely impressed by what I have been missing by not visiting these forums. Some amazing photography!

Thanks, Mitch, something about those red berries that drives me wild. Glad you mentioned that detail as it confirms to me that others can see the benefit, especially excellent photographers like yourself.
