View Full Version : GND Filter investment questions

I would like to invest in a good set of GND filters and whatever is required to use them with my 30D. I have heard the Lee system is good, so I'm looking at that option now. I gather I need the foundation kit, and a 77mm adapter to attach the holder, and then of course the filters themselves. I was thinking of getting their 3-pack of hard GNDs (0.3 0.6 0.9). They're 15cm long I think I read so I'm guessing they should be able to work as NDs as well by only using the darkened part of the filter?

With the standard attachment in place is there likely to be vignetting at 17mm (27mm effective)?

I assume the lens hood cannot be used with the holder in place, though the lens cap should fit?

Is it normal to attach and detach the filter holder every time you want to take a shot with these filters?

Would it be practical, for situations where a tripod isn't required, to hand-hold the filters in front of the lens without the holder attached at all? Any practical problems doing it this way?

Appreciate any advice :)

I have similar questions. Any Lee filter users around?

I found it very useful and am now the owner of the Lee System with the set of hard grads... (soft grads are apparently in high demand at the moment and are out of stock)

thanks for the link.
So what made you choose to purchase the hard grads instead of the soft grads?

Lee Filters is back-ordered on the soft grads. Unless you find a store with stock that hasn't been taken yet, you're in for a few weeks wait for the soft grads. I am purchasing both, but the soft GNDs are simply not available immediately at the moment.

Unless you commonly shoot where there's a pronounced, straight, horizon (seascape or plains), a soft will be more useful. This, unfortunately, means the demand for the soft grads is higher and they're harder to get.
