Way to go Canada at winning the World Cup of Hockey (should still be called the canada cup) over those pesky finns!
Finns make great photographers, but only mediocre hockey players.

Thanks ... however, the reaction of some over-enthusiastic (read drnk as lords) fans in the streets of downtown Toronto left much to be desired ...

Hey, can you blame them? As a Leaf fan, I can testify it's been a LONG wait for any type of celebration in downtown TO.

Okay, for the uninitiated, please explain the difference between World Cup of Hockey and Stanley Cup. Don't forget: where I live, ice simply doesn't exist, so I really don't know these things.
Seriously.

World Cup of Hockey is a hockey tournamet between countries like Finland, Sweden, Japan etc...
Stanley Cup is an local hockey tournament in North America. SC is one of the oldest tournaments for professional athletes, anyway.

Oh, okay. So these are national teams.
Well then, congratulations Canada!!! Whooopeee!!! Hoooray!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D
(Don't forget --- someone in this forum made me an honorary Canadian a while back! Of course once they realize how uninformed I am about Hockey, they'll probably revoke that honor.)

I know that in Canada, hockey only means one thing----missing teeth.
I really don't understand all the nuances of the game, and we do have a couple NHL team about 150 miles from here. (Los Angeles and Anaheim)
Icing. What the heck is icing? And a blue line foul. Someone gets penalized because they used the wrong color paint?
Screwy game.
Curling is much more exciting.

So, does that mean Canada will cease to exist in 20 minutes, when the NHL's CBA expires, and the league is shut down?
Man, I'm really bummed about it.

RR. The world of hockey doe's not revolve around the NHL. True, this is a bummer with the lockout. However, this is going to be good for the Junoirs. Go Giants Go!

I remember reading an article by a former American Sports Illustrated writer who covered many different sports in different countries around the world, and lived in many of the countries for extended periods.
He said that many countries really love soccer (football), but he's absolutely NEVER seen any sport that was as much a part of the culture of a country as hockey is in Canada.
He said the only thing that came even remotely close was rugby in Wales, but that was a distant second.
When you consider that hockey, baseball (http://www.craigmarlatt.com/canada/symbols_facts&lists/baseball.html), basketball (http://www.canadians.ca/more/profiles/n/n_james_naismith.htm), and "North American style football (http://www.faqfarm.com/Sports/Football/20377)" all were first played/created in Canada, that's pretty impressive.
