I have a BG-E2 on my 40D well as one on my 30D. With the 30D I can turn on the camera with one batter or two. With the 40D it will only turn on with 2 batteries installed. Is this the way it works on the 40D or do I have a defective grip.

Canon Tech support was no help. The tech guy I spoke to though the 40D had to have two batteries in the grip to work, but when I mentioned my 30D he pulled one out that they had there and tested it with only one battery and it worked. The Tech guy was not sure at that point.

Any 40D owner with the BG-E2 grip, please let me know how it works on your camera. I don't plan on shooting with only one battery, but if I have a defective grip I want to get it repaired while it's still under warranty.

I used mine (BG-E2N) with only one battery while the others were charging. Which slot did you try? I had mine in the slot closest to the buttons if that makes a difference (it shouldn't I would think).

My 40D works with the bg-e2 with one battery fine. I just tried both battery compartments too.

Now to figure out why my CF card just died...

Just what I suspected. I am now on hold with Canon Service to schedule a repair of my battery grip. Thanks for the info and the quick response.

gryphonslair99,

Just curious what you found out about the grip. I was wondering if it was an issue with it being the BN-E2 and the not BN-E2N which is compatible with the 40D?
I was going to pick up the E2 if it works since it's a little cheaper than the E2N.
