Thanks to the miracle of credit cards, many of us won't find out until the UPS truck arrives.

LoL, yeah, that was the same look my wife had when a truckload of White Lightning stuff arrived. She looks very impressed, doesn't she?

My wifes response was " Happy Birthday." She surprised me by ordering one for my birthday ( one of those milestone's we don't like to talk about) . I hope to have it here soon. It will be my first digital so my learning curve will be large, but I'm looking forward to it.

Similar story here. My wife gave me a 10D for my birthday a couple weeks ago, and we took it back so I could get the 20D. She handed me the wrapped gift and said "don't shake it!", couldn't figure out why I couldn't shake a box of underwear

This thread had me cracking up. I really like the picture. I can completely relate.

One motto I stand up by and that is: CASH IS KING. I'm lucky I live in an area where I don't need to have stuff shipped all of the time, just head off to a store w/ cash in hand. Then, the only problem is explaining the equipment when it is discovered.

Danny,

Just use the line my wife uses when I notice a new pair of shoes she's wearing. " Oh I've had those a long time. Don't you remember me buying those last fall?"

My wife was pleased that she'd get my 10D when I got the 20D.

Of course, that was before we had water damage in the house, an engine to replace in the mini-van and a hired contractor nearing finishing our basement...

Still ordering the 20D.

My girlfriend's comment was "that's how I looked when you bought yours" - 10D that was!

Classic!

Use reverse psychology.
First tell her you are buying the MKII, and show her the price.
Later, say that you've decided it's best to budget, and you've decided to settle on the 20D for 1/3 the price.

And start using the 20D and if she asks say you painted the 2 for a joke.

Amazingly enough my wife didn't say a word when the 20D and the 100-400L showed up. I sold my Digital Rebel so perhaps she tought it would cover the cost :)

I just told her I had a few weddings to shoot over the next year that would cover the cost.

Anyone getting married?

I don't think I can say here what my husbands response was when I told him I got my email from B&H saying they were taking pre-orders  - wish I could order, but will have to make a few more $$ first!

Well the wife doesn't seem to understand the whole camera obsession that I have. I was able to get her to sorta understand over the summer the importance of having a DSLR over a P&S. We were at Great Adventure over the summer one day and I didn't want to lug the DRebel, so I brought the G3 instead, she was so frustrated with the shutter lag that she finally admitted that the DRebel was so much easier to take a shot. I then went on to tell her that even the DRebel can be frustrating especially when shooting fast moving objects due to the lack of being able to force the camera into AI Servo mode, and that Sports mode limits your ability to set aperture, shutter etc. Well I lost her in the conversation, but I did tell her that a 10D or Mark II would help solve that problem hehe. The one thing that she has been telling me now is "Well I just know you, you won't be happy with the 20D, you should have just gotten the Mark II." My response was that the Mark II is way too much camera for me, which I honestly feel it is way too much, and that I am not a professional, that I am clearly an amateur. The 20D will be perfect for me, it's blazing fast, I finally can set AI Servo, and of course it's black! LOL

Well, let me be the first to bring a new kind of 'downer' to the thread.

Due to unusual financial circumstances I've canceled my 20D order :(. I was solid in getting that sucker regardless of what the wind brings but I snapped out of my obsession for a few minutes to realize I have a few other things to attend to. It's not so bad. I enjoy my 10D, and I get to watch all of you 20D monkey's tinker with yours and iron out the issues until I'm ready to get mine ;).

The wife couldn't believe it when I told her I canceled the order. in fact, I wish I would have snapped a picture of that expression being that she knows when I set my mind to something there's little if anything that deters me. Especially when it comes to camera stuff! She said, "Really?, I know how much you wanted that camera... mabye you can get it for Christmas, or mabye you can get that bigger one, or mabye a better one..."

Ahh well. It's all good  Lookin' forward to more feedback and pics of you new owners!

Cheers!

Jeff

Even though I have 2 gimpy knees, I can still out run the spouse. However I have a hard time ducking flying ash trays and a really hard time dodging 12ga. buckshot.
(staying with the 10D for now. Doc says that the wounds from the 10D debacle should heal completely in the next couple of months)

I can relate, this 20D purchase didn't help my financial situation either, but I'm a Canon DSLR addict that needs serious help! Help me Help me I'm crying out for help!

He he I like this thread. :D

As I don't have a wife (or a husband for that matter!) I guess it was more my parent's reaction that counted. They knew I had been talking a bit about the camera, but one day I came home with it. They just looked at me, mentally shook their heads, and later on I found out they had found it crazy of me to spend a month's salary on the thing. Now they've realised I'm really into photography and they are happy for me.

I doubt they'll let me get a new lens within the nearby future though...

My wife's completely in favor of the purchase ...

... as soon as I sell my truck to pay for it.

(Seriously ... and I'm considering it.)

Well my wife finally had an expression about the new 20D. I took it uostairs to shoot one of the cats. I bursted until the buffer was full, looked at her with a big grin, and her jaw was on the floor.

All she could manage was "i want... i want... i want..."

So I grinned bigger, and switched it to small JPEG, and fired about 30 frames at full speed. I think it'll keep that up until the card is full.

...tee-hee...
:D

So she's getting the 10D, which is nice because that will mean that I'll have 2 cameras when I need them. And I'll probably have to get an 80x Gig card so she can have a gig, too.

*AND* she'll probably want one of those 28-300 hyper-zoom lenses. I'm going to have to find one that's decent, though. Luckily she can't lift the 100-400 or I'd be worried.

hrm. SO here's my plan to get the 20D.
if i bought one now i'd be a lonely man because my girlfriend of 5 years is probaly expecting a ring soon.
What i think i'm gonna do is buy her the ring then buy the camera the same week i propose. Then she will still be so happy beacuse of the engagement and i'll be a happy camper too.(because of the engagement of coarse  )

I also envy all of you who actually have the grip for the 20D, I can't find it anywhere here in stock in the US!

If you already have a 10D she probably won't even notice the difference.. Best to only have one out at a time however. Better beat her to the mailbox when the credit card bill arrives though..

In my case I'm not married, no problem..

I didn't even tell her about getting the 20D. I used it for the first time this weekend, and she just said "Oh, you bought your camera with you today?"

That's not even the punch line. My previous digital camera was a Coolpix 5700. Now, let's just hope she doesn't notice the new zoom lens or 300mm prime I'm hoping to get this week..........

Jonny

Personally i wouldn't tell her. Over the past 5 months i sold my old Fuji 6900 and bought a dRebel, 4 lenses, monopod, bags and much more.... I just told her the 6900 was a good camera and covered the cost of of the kit.
When she sees anything new i just say it came with the camera but as i am just a novice i haven't got round to using it yet. I say i need to nail the basics first!!

SENster7

See I couldn't pull the old don't tell her trick since:

1)The Digital Rebel wasn't black, it was stick out like a sore thumb silver...

2)I have the grip with the Digital Rebel and I wasn't able to find the 20D grip and she would notice that in a second...

3)I made it clear that the AF of the Digital Rebel wasn't as fast as the 20D, and that I am unable to fire off multiple shots with the Digital Rebel. All of a sudden I would be firing off 30+ shots without a hitch and the camera became magically black? Nope ain't gonna fly...

4)She actually is very smart and I would need to get up really early in the morning to fool her, and I hate getting up early...

All in all she is very supportive, just as long as I buy her little things that she wants...like that new house she wants in PA
