Training monday, match tuesday, sheffield uni. wednesday:
thursday and friday free I think.
Albert dock's not bad but parkings terrible, depends what's on at the arena.

Rogan

i can maybe do next week as well

Colin Morey
7th of March 2009 (Sat), 18:06
I've just come back from the Arena (and a quick wander around the docks without my camera, and apart from nearly getting hit by some flying road barriers on the way back, I'd like to repeat my visit, but with my camera. I can do most night's except Monday next week.

invisiblegirls

Peitolm,
Did you park in the arena car park and is it still £3 for an evening?
As I say I can do Thursday.

Colin Morey
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 08:29
We did park in the arena multi-story, and I think it was £4, I suspect parking in the open air car-park may be better,

invisiblegirls
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 08:32
If you mean the albert dock, absolute nightmare, no spaces every time I've been and the VAT car park on the left as you enter the arena is likely to get you a ticket. There is parking by the liver bldngs but its about a 10 min walk to the albert dock from there.

Rogan
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 09:38
u shud learn to use trains ;)

Colin Morey
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 17:10
Hmm, how far is the station from the docks? TBH, i'm happy to park in the multi-story, (it's better lit for one thing.

That works for me, so I would be happy to join in.

I might even have done something with the pics I took at the last Castlefield shoot by then, too.

Well, I think we should try and be clear of the area before the clubs really kick off, there doesn't appear to be anything on at the arena on Friday night according to, http://www.accliverpool.com/whatson/index.asp

How about 7:30->9:00/9:30 sound?

From my uni building to the docks is roughly a 10-15min walk I think, so from Lime Street should be similar. I may join you if I've not gone back to Manchester by then, although the thought of walking around at night in Liverpool with my camera doesn't fill me with any more confidence than Manchester, to be honest!

Nice work Colin, I love the angle you got on #2.

I'm going to a party at ARC studio tomorrow morning (probably ending around lunchtime on sunday, if previous parties there are anything to go by). That means that I probably won't be in a fit state to work on anything from tonight until at least monday, but should hopefully post something then.

reckon anyone wud be up for a strobist style shoot?

i know a place in NQ in town taht can be hired out (large enff for 10ish people maybe more and a few models) for like £60 for the day cud be a fun cheap day if people had equipment/found models!

I have work due in for Friday (also the 24th, 30th, 2nd, 3rd, 24th and so on), so I won't be there on Thursday night. I probably shouldn't have introduced myself until after I finish uni, as I've just been continually ducking out of these meets! The sooner May comes the better. :)

Thursday 19th March, Piccadilly, Manchester. 7:00 PM

Suggested car park, Cathedral Approach: -

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.48585,-2.245502&spn=0.003901,0.01133&z=17 (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.48585,-2.245502&spn=0.003901,0.01133&z=17)

Piccadilly : -

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.481042,-2.236952&spn=0.003901,0.01133&z=17

To get to Piccadilly from the car park, come out of car park with cathedral in front of you. Turn right, then turn left at the lights, you should now see the 'wheel', this is Exchange Square. Cross the square keeping Selfridges on your right, turn right, then turn next left into Market Street. Go straight on you'll come into Piccadilly. Look to the right, you'll see the tram stop. There is a coffee shop next to the tram stop, suggest we meet there.

Yeah, Liverpool was good. Slight initial panic that the lights weren't turned on at the Echo Arena though, but they put them on shortly after we arrived for just long enough to get a few shots. I think Colin's #2 shot above would have been a cracker if the main lights had still been on.

I'll be there for the thursday night shoot.

I still haven't started on my shots from the last Castlefield shoot, as I've been a bit busy, but have managed to do the few shots I took in Liverpool:

#1. Echo Arena

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8878.jpg

#2 Echo Arena again, bit of a cockup with the arena name being behind a pole. Don't know how I managed that, I was sure I had checked it before taking the shot.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8884.jpg

#3 and again

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8887.jpg

We then moved on to Albert Dock and, whilst the others were shooting the bright lights inside Anchor Courtyard, I seemed to miss the gap in the wall and shot the outside instead. Comments welcome as to whether these two work or not.

#4 Anchor Courtyard

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8896.jpg

#5 Victorian post box, Anchor Courtyard. Yes, I know the wall is a bit 'warm' but it seemed to work better that way.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8908-b.jpg

Final set was at a trio of vent pipes, sticking up out of the ground. I tried three different compositions, including a low down ultra wide shot to converge the verticals. Opinions as to which is best (or if they are all crap!) will be gratefully received.

#6

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/sandpiperphotos/night%20shots/8897-b.jpg

#7 I 'warmed' the windows a little in this one, any preference as to 'warm' or the 'cool blue' in the other two shots ?

Out of the three pipe shots I prefer the 3rd shot. The light on the right hand side of the first shot is bit distracting, as is the overlap of the pipes on the second shot, for me. The third one works well though! Technically (from what little I know about night shots!) the photos of the Echo Arena look excellent, like you say just a shame about the placement of the lights in front of the name. If you didn't mention it I probably wouldn't have noticed though, tbh.

Whereabouts were you stood?

Pete Got there just after 7.00 and I met him there about 7.20, having been stuck in a traffic jam, we were standing about 25 yards from neros, by one of the benches. We were there until well after 7.30 when we were joined by another hardy soul and then spent about 90 minutes shooting Piccadilly Gardens before moving on to Chinatown.

I'm sorry you didn't spot us, we had a couple of tripods / cameras in full view, stood on top of the bench, so that we were clearly photographers and not just some ordinary down and outs.

You have my mobile number, you should have called me and I could have told you exactly where we were, and jumped up and down waving if need be.

Hmmm, my days off are thursday & sunday, although I book quite a few saturdays off during the warmer months, to go and shoot events. I like to shoot airshows, carshows, motor racing, re-enactment battles and anything else that takes my fancy. Other than events, I like to do quite a bit of bird / animal photography, either out in the wilds or in zoos. I will also get together with a model from time to time for a shoot.

I am always interested in trying new subjects though.

Quite a lot in common to what I have done in the past apart from carshows & motor racing though I once shot some go-carting. A former work colleague was a member of the American Civil War Society in which I photographed several times; I've been to numerous airshows the last one being in Southport last year; I love wildlife but my lens range only goes up to 200mm at the moment. I feel I need at least 300mm and possibly a 1.4x extender; I've also done model shoots at the local camera club.

Hmmm, a bad weekend for me. I am already trying to decide between two events that weekend (Goodwood festival of speed or the 'Stars & stripes' show at Tatton Park).

I have to say, it's looking like Tatton at the moment. I would like to do Goodwood, but it's a lot more expensive and involves hotels as well. Tatton Park is only a few quid and an hour's drive. I've done the stars & stripes show a couple of times now and always get a good batch of images from it.

I feel I need at least 300mm and possibly a 1.4x extender; I've also done model shoots at the local camera club.

Yes, we do seem to have quite a lot in common, I had a glance at your posts in other threads. I have a similar background in photography, having also grown up with a camera in hand as my father was a keen photographer. I also used to do weddings etc., back in the 1980s.

Main difference, I am not remotely interested in football ;)

Hopefully we will get to meet at some point.

Hi guys...Would it be possible to re-direct you all to this thread here;

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=677936

Then, we have our very own meeting point...arrange photo shoots etc. Unfortunately, I was a little late in joining POTN for this shoot but would love to meet up wth you all in the not too distant future.

Dave.

:) Hey Dave - I wasn't being funny in the slightest :) - if it came across as such, please accept my sincere apologies. I don't frequent this forum much - but I keep a watch on this thread in case were planning on getting together. You go for it and I'm sure I'll keep watch on your thread too - I'm out and about in manchester on a semi regular basis, so would love to know where/when there are others meeting.

On the note of getting together - anybody fancy a trip out next week?

I'm sorry too Chris...Sometimes it is hard to get a message across on forums to emphasise a true meaning of what you're trying to say.

btw, I'm off next week...Mon-Fri.
