Hi all
DPP will open jpg, tif and CR2 images created with my old Rebel XTi just fine. My problem is I purchased a 40D and when I try to open a folder containing raw and jpg files created with my new 40D, a warning box appears saying DPPviewer has encountered a problem and then closes! My 40D has firmware version 1.0.3 that it originally came loaded with, could this be my problem?
I have deleated and reinstalled DPP and updated it with the latest, but it still wants to close! Any advice would be appreciated - jimmy

My son just sent a CR2 file he took with his 40D and it will open just fine. CR2 files taken with my camera cause it to close !!!

Yes, this is a known problem with DPP and it is compounded if Preferences is set to "Open with the last used folder". If after using DPP you put a file into that folder that DPP can't open, probably because it was changed in some way by another program (for instance, rotated, which changes the Exif orientation marker) it will crash. Moreover, it will keep on going back to that same folder and crashing every time you try to open it. Fortunately there is an easy solution. DPP puts an item in the right-click menu of every folder in your computer. Right-click on a folder that you are sure contains no image files and select "Open with DPP". An easy way to do this without even having to open Explorer is to right-click on the Start button. Since there are no corrupted image files there, DPP will open with no problem. Now change the Preferences setting to always open to a folder without images. If in the future DPP crashes when you navigate to a particular folder you will at least know where to look for the trouble-maker. In general, if you have RAWs and Jpgs, it is a good idea to keep them in separate folders since the chances are much greater that the corrupted file will be a Jpg.

Hey tzalman, thanks for your reply and time. My DPP lets me choose the folder to I want to open, so this is no problem. Only folders created using my new 40D camera shut down DPP ! Folders created with my old Rebel TXi all still open properly and DPP works just fine !

Thanks all for your suggestions. I finally got DPP to work. I simply updated my 40D firmware to the latest 1.0.5 Now all my newly created folders will open and not shut down DPP. The folders (pictures) created before the firmware update still shut down DPP, but that I can live with. :)
Hey have a happy new year - jimmy

Anyone know why my DPP software (v3.2.1.5) is crashing after opening a folder that contains .jpg files. I'm not sure, but I think this all started happening after I made a recent firmware update (v1.08) on my 40D.
Now I need to separate the raw and jpg and can only open the raw files without crashing....very annoying.

I've only had this happen if the folder contained jpg or tiff files that were altered with other software...

I'm not getting this error any more...seems after I installed a new version of the DPP software it never ocurred again.
