In #1, get control of your background - much too distracting.

#2 has nice lighting, good exposure and a decent composition. You are on the right track here. Now start working on her hair and the background. She should also be more off-center horizontally.

i see what you mean about the background. these pics were taken at our christmas party and are just some candid shots with the 430ex and the room lights. what do you mean by her hair? do i need to blur the b/g more or bring i out more?

a quick question: are you bouncing the flash or shooting it direct?

as for the hair, i think bob means that it looks kind of goofy in the second shot. compared to the first one its also losing the highlights on the right side. its also lacking the shine of the first, and that detracts from the image itself.
