My Vosonic portable HD cannot (most of the time) 'see' the Hard drive, and gives the 'Path does not exist.' message. I have been told to check that the drive is properly connected (physically installed). Are there any special tricks or steps to doing this in the typical storage unit? Will the data be lost? What's the usual process to doing this? Appreciate some advice! :D

I don't know what counts as typical for a storage device, but the HD connection should be pretty straightforward. You can only plug the HD in one way properly, wont lose data while connecting/disconnecting (assuming the unit is powered down).

Generaly speaking , power down the unit, and just wiggle the drive connector back and forth a tad. If this is one with the card reader built in can it always read the cards but not the drive? might be a USB issue also

you don't mention a model, but i'd first try a different usb cable, and possibly a different port on your computer. the vosonic site mentions the devices are usb 2.0, so connected to an old system they would appear to be sluggish.

the hard drive is removable no? try reseating the drive with the power off.

look in the manual to see if there is a master reset for the firmware, or even a firmware update.

The other thing to look at is whether there's enough power for the drive. I have several USB hard drives that can't manage without an external power adapter. Try that, or a powered USB hub between drive and camera.
