View Full Version : Lens to bridge the gap ?

I have a 17-40, 100-400 & a 1.4 TC, can you spot the gap? What do you recommend to fill the 40 to 100 space? I would love the 85mm f1.2 L but it’s a wee bit pricy. Do you think the 50 mm 1.4 will a: fill the gap and b: be sharp enough.
Suggestions on a post card :)

The 50 1.4 will be so sharp you could shave with it...
Tat or if the f/1.2 is too dear.. maybe an 85mm f/1.8?

You could get the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 AND 85mm 1.8, all of which will be sharper than any of the zooms!!
Not to mention the photo holiday you could book with the change left over compared to an 85 1.2L!!

I have the same two lenses and the 28-135 IS to 'fill the gap'. I know it is not quite an L lens, but it is not awful, handles well enough and is easier to carry than the two L zooms that also fill the gap. A reasonable compromise and I find the IS handy occasionally.

If you go to my Gallery, click on my Remington one and my Midwest Street Machine one.. They are all done in the 50mm execpt for a few FISHEYE but you can tell which ones those are! :) I will have a BUNCH of midwest street machine 50mm's this weekend.. They are closing down the streets this weekend and lighting them up! :)

I agree with spearce6, get the 50F1.8, and the 85F1.8.
One advantage of the 85F1.8 over the F1.2 version (besides price), is that the F1.8 actually focuses much faster for action shots.
If you were looking at a zoom instead, definately look hard at the Tamron 28-75F2.8. It's a great lens at a great price, with a 6yr warranty, and most say it gives even the pricey Canon 24-70F2.8L lens a run for image quality.

The 28-135 is a good buy but I have heard from alot of people that yes, the IS is nice but the pictures are not that nice.
I'm telling you. if you get the 1.8 and then play with the 1.4 later, you will kick your self in the but... Don't go cheap.

LOL No, not the EF 28-135mm
Either get a prime or the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.

You have a gap in two respects: Focal length and speed. Both can be addressed by the beautiful pair 50/1.4 (or 50/1.8) and 85/1.8. They are both very sharp and great portrait lenses in the short/medium range.
A zoom slower than f2.8 won't fill the speed gap.

Thanks for all the help. To be honest until now I had not considered trying a non Canon lens, have any of you got examples from the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.
Jens, you are quite correct I do lack speed (in more ways than one). I am tossing up between the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.8, I know that the best solution is to get both but the bag is heavy enough as it is.
If only all decisions in life were this much fun :D

I have read your views, explored the net, tried the lenses in a shop and this morning I have ordered both the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.8.
I look forward to posting the results.

Good decision, you'll enjoy these lenses 8)
If you still want to see the results of the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, look into my gallery right here - http://www.pbase.com/olegis/flowers&page=all , a lot of photos there were made with that lens.
