It's kinda startling not to see oranges to be orange but they're not orange and they're oranges that's supposed to be orange but they're not orange oranges.

Here you go, straight out of the camera. I converted by separating channels, converting one channel back to 24-bit colour and playing with levels.

That's a mouthful...but in the end you are correct!

As said above I'm definitely more fond of the image with colour.
Simply by adjusting curves and adding a simply border can do wonders.

You could make the orange more vibrant quite easily so it stands out even more if you wanted.

Agreed, and I've played with colour extensively, however this was an experiment in monochrome conversion. I like your edit though, if I were to be looking for a colour version.

I find that when I convert a picture from colour to B&W it never does the image justice.
So I typically either scrap the picture or just make do with what I have.

Me too, which is the reason behind the experimenting. I've seen some awesome B&W work and want to be able to produce my own.
