View Full Version : Mirror Lens on 1D MarkII

Has anyone had any luck finding a mirror reflex lens for the EOS cameras. I've been looking at purchasing a low profile 500mm or 600mm mirror lens for my 1D MarkII... (Sigma has a 600MM), but I hear Canon will void your warranty if you attach a manual focus lens on an EOS camera.

I've an old Sigma 600 with an FD mount adapter.
Can't say it gets a lot of use, as the pics aren't sharp enough.
Still saving for a 100-400L

Agree. I also tried my old FD mount SIGMA 600/f8 with an FD->EOS macro adapter (made by CANON, mechanical, no glass elements). Even infinity focusing is possible (!) but pictures are difficult to focus and even if in focus they're pretty soft. Looks like the pixel density of a modern dSLR outperforms the lenses resolution by far.
BTW: Sounds like bull**it that CANON will void their warranty. Nothing will happen to your camera. And if so - how will they prove?

The voided warrantee sounds like an old wives tale.Find out from canon themselves-or just ignore it all :?
The sigma 600mm sigma is one of the average ones-there are much ,MUCH cheaper, crappier ones!!
I've used many of the cheapo's and none of them are remotely acceptable in my opinion.Yes i got some good images out of them BUT i took several hundred images to get them!
Put it this way-the canon 75-300 at 300mm wide open will easily beat them in resolution and contrast.
I haven't used the sigma 600mm yet but have a semi pro friend who has.He thought it quite OK.
Note that this model has been made for many years and could very well be improved over early versions such as those mentioned above by others.
Other average-to-good models are the tamron SP 500/8 and the vivitar 'solid cat'.Photo.net has a good article comparing the tamron to a canon L prime while luminouse landscape tests one against an L zoom.
The Tamron and the sigma are both still available new.
The best ones are supposedly the Zeiss,Minolta/leica,nikon,etc models.
The nikon could be the easiest to buy and adapt.Make sure you get the later model (after about '83 ,with the closer focusing i believe)

A friend of mine has the Tamron with a Nikon mount and is using it on his Nikon 2DH. I takes pretty good pics in bright light.... but I agree they are a little soft and Nikon noisy.
I'm going to have to ask Canon about the warranty claim. I heard this from a KEH sales Rep who was told this by a Canon Rep.
Not sure why you couldn't do it without damaging the camera. I know Nikon users of the latest DSLRs use manual lens on their camera with no problems!
