As I was walking withmy G9, I saw this wonderful flower vine highlighted in the morning light. I have no idea what it is. Identification help would be greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy.

Hiya Irwin,

Lovely shot but I've no idea as to what it maybe, the flower looks a bit like the ' Wine Cup ' flower was this in your home town locality ??

Cheers for now

I don't know, but I might be able to find out - it's cultivated here in one of our city parks, but seems to die back to the roots in our winter climate that freezes a few degrees a few times. I've taken quite a few shots of this flower this past summer. Very showy with the bright red buds and purple flowers.

It seems to be a shrub; the ones I've seen are about five to eight feet tall overall, and maybe six feet in diameter. Does this sound familiar?

Hi Mark. Glad to see your computer is back among the living. Thanks for your always kind thoughts.

I took this during my recent trip to see Robin's family in Santa Monica. My Chanuckah gift was a nifty little G9, which is perfect for travel. For the first time I was not lugging a tripod and a bag full of stuff. I had several morning of meandering around looking for interesting shots. It seemed very different from the pace of my focus stacking. One shot and then try something new. I was very pleased with the quality.

I'll try to PM you later. Happy New Year.

HI Glen. The plant I took was a vine growing on a wall that I took on a recent visit to Santa Monica. That's all the info I have on it. Thanks fortaking the time to look andreply. Have a great new year.

Happy New Year to you too.

I'm certain it's the same plant - just looked at mine again, and the flowers are the same shape and colour. But what really confirms it is the stamens - they come out of the central area of the flower, then have a strange hook-shaped or U-shaped section at the end - just like your's. And the stamens also are pinkish purple colour.

Oh yes, and the buds are bright red.

If I see one of the gardening staff in the park (right across the road from me), I'll ask them what it is.

Irwin:

I talked to a gardener in the city park across the street (Beacon Hill Park).

The one we have here is a large shrub, and should be a Tibouchina Urvilleana. He said it is native to Brazil. It dies back to the roots in the winter in our climate which gets a few degrees into freezing a few times each winter.

Your's is a climbing variety and is probably a Tibouchina Laxa

Thanks Glen. I really appreciate the effort you put in. I had no idea as to even the family the plant was in. I would have spent hours thumbing through pictures and looking at vines on the net. Tanksagain.
