I had a chance to mount a camera up in the gantry at Joe Louis arena before the Friday and Saturday games for the GLI tournament. After securing the camera with a superclamp and several safety straps, I was quite pleased with the early results...... I was using a Canon MKII with a 300 2.8 mounted about 100' above the ice surface, at a oblique angle to the goal. Triggered the camera with a pocket wizard 32 channel Multi Max unit. ISO 800 1/1000 f/2.8. I also mounted several White Lightning 1600 strobes on Saturday for the championship game and hopefully I will check those out and post later.....

Excellent ... although the crop might be a bit tight ... what's a full frame look like? Shooting RAW of jpeg? How many images do you plan for ... if you plan? Will be very interested in the strobed images ... also a picture of the setup if you took one. I'm not a hockey fan but with images like these being a fan isn't necessary! :-)

Dwight.... I did not take a picture of the setup. I may do this again on tomorrow on New Years eve for the Red Wings game. I will try and remember to shoot a reference shot of the setup. This time I only shot JPEG.

I will be shooting a game from the catwalk next weekend I like the perspective of these but maybe a little tight.
I am going to try me 70-200 2.8

I agree, I mounted my 28-300 on Saturday, but I have not had a chance to post any of those yet. Plus I mounted several White lightning 1600 strobes to enhance the view a little. You will find that if you shoot ambient light, you will be dealing with the 60hz of the lights in the arena. Trying to set a custom white balance will be a challenge. Checked out your work.... Nice stuff.;)
