I am planning on buying the following for a trip to England, plase let me know you honest opinon: (Limited budget but hey)

1) Lowepro CompuTrekker AW Camera + Laptop Backpack - Black
2) Battery Grip for Digital Rebel
3) Extra Battery
4) I need a cheap solid tripod, under 100. Can someone give me a brand that is good?

Anyone know of a good reasonable Travel Insurance Company?

I don't want to lose $1500 + equipment over there.

Is the Lowepro good? Thanks.

How optional is the battery grip? I know I want the backpack, extra battery, and tripod. How would you rate the optional battery grip? How great is it?

You MUST get an X-drive or some equivelent...

I took an 8 day trip to Newfoundland and put 2,800 plus photos (all RAW) on a pair of X-drives..

If I had only CF cards I would have died! :)

I love the grip on my 10D and I have one on order for my 20D. I always keep the grip on. The camera can pretty much shoot all day long on a single charge. As far as the backpack, I have 3-4 Lowepro bags. Just got another one yesterday, The Photo Trekker AW II. My only problem with Lowepro is on my two previous bags (A Mini Trekker backpack and Top Load waist bag) the zippers (one zipper on each bag) have broken off in less than a year of use. The zipper pull tab on my Top Load seemed to have disintigrated. But I still buy Lowepro because the build quality is very durable. With my Mini Trekker backpack I had my 10D w/70-200, 420EX, A2 body and 2 more lenses, quite a heavy bag, and was able to hang the bag by its nylon top handle without even a single stitch popping from the weight. If you wanna know how much faith I put into that Lowepro bag, with all my equippment in it, I hung it from that nylon handle 5 feet above the ground, sometimes not moving it for weeks at a time. (KIDS, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME). So thats my scoop on the Lowepro and the grip. Look on B&H for tripods but I think you might have to go alittle over $100 for a good one. Good luck and happy traveling.

P.S. - We'd better be seein' some England pics when you get back!

Tru-dat. I got one not to long ago, makes a great tool on a trip, but make sure you have atleast 2 medium-large CF cards. Some X-drives and take a while to transfer images. I think my drive (not an X drive, I cant think of the brand right now) takes about 30 min. to transfer a full 1GIG CF card.

Will you lose info if you go through the detectors at the airport?

I'd guess that since he's going with the Computrekker bag he's taking his laptop. I always just dump my cards to laptop for storage.

Looks like a good setup, but you might skip on the battery grip and put a little more into the tripod. I think that money would be better spent.

I have that Lowepro bag and it works great with my Thinkpad X24.

Again .. no I just did this and was the subject of every security guards wildest scrutiny... apperently large red headed vikings are at the top of airport securities most wanted list. We're funny that way..

So my two X-drives (I copied every card to both drives before fromatting.. my poor mans mobile RAID) were poked proded, X-rayed, Cat scanned, dog sniffed and had full cavity searches and came through fine. :)

I agree,.. I'd ditch the grip for portabilties sake myself...

I do NOT take my BG-ed3 on trips.. it's just extra weight. A few extra batteries in a pocket takes up much less room.

I also did not take a laptop despite packing it all in a Tamrac Cyberpack... The Xdrive were far more portable.

Not if it's in your carry-on. Send it through checked baggage and the XRay machines are bigger, and the handling's rougher, so there's a lot more that can go wrong.

Should I be concerned? I am a large red head, with a semi-scruffy beard?

Actually on this trip, I will probably keep my laptop at home, but want that ability to pack everything together when I need it.

As for travel insurance:My renters/ homeowners insurance covers my camera for theft even overseas. You might look into your policy to see what they can do for you.

Have fun in the UK.

Cheers,

Darrin
