I recently met a fellow at the botanical garden shooting BF's. We talked and I found out about a camera club that has been in Richmond for years! Well I decided I needed someone to shoot with so I joined last night. There are a lot of folks my age :? (Young) The big suprise was that so many shot slides! Now, I am not gonna get a film cam, no matter what, I love digital. We did have a very interesting slide show and judging and in the future they will have a digital projector so us digital folks can join in.
Hummm, my friend wants to sell me my old Minolta 700 back cheep,, maybe I could try my hand at slides
Nah,, I love digital, I can just delete my mistakes :D
How many others are in local clubs?

I'd join one if it was convenient (ie; local) and more suited to me (ie; nature & animals & landscapes).
Alas, none of the clubs are very close to me, or the ones that are close are very small (like a dozen people).
It could be interesting though. I may just have to look them up again...

Funny that you asked JZaun, today I was planning to visit a club here but totally forgot. Not only that, but it seems most still use film (an impression I got from a previous visit).
Will definitely visit them soon.

I joined one about three months ago, and I'm enjoying it so far. I've met a lot of nice folks with a shared general passion/interest for photography, and there's an interesting variance of specific goals or even careers (hobbyists, photo journalists, stock photography) and interests (e.g., nature, nautical, architectural, etc.).
Contests have challenged me to attempt subject matter that I hadn't previously photographed. I've learned a little from various workshops, and I've learned alot about local resources and photo opportunities.
It's similar to participating in forums, but obviously more personal.

The one I visited doesn't have contests, not even in their web site. They only hold public exhibits.
Thanks for the idea HJMinard, I'll suggest that for them.

Hi JZ,
It would appear that you guys over in the US don't have anywhere near as many local clubs as we do here in the UK. I am a member of ADAPS, a very progressive and friendly club - take a look at our website,
http://www.adaps.org.uk/
you can see our syllabus for the coming 'season' (including digital workgroups), a gallery of images and links to some of our members personal sites. We have both digital and 'wet-film' members who both compete in our competitions as we believe it's the image that counts, not how it was produced.
I'd recommend joining one if you have the chance - what have you got to lose?

You're welcome! Our contests are purely for fun and learning, although we do have a point system to award a "Photographer of the Year" award. Judging is independent ... I'm not sure how the judges are obtained.
I forgot to mention that our club is 80-90 percent digital, with a few film holdouts, but all are welcome.
