First game this season, and first time in this arena for me...no holes in the glass and the glass was not friendly to shoot through with lots of marks so spent most the time shooting from up top. Lighting not good, ISO 1600, 1/800th, 2.8, 300 2.8 IS except through the glass ones were 70-200 2.8 IS. Used costum WB but that didn't work well so had to fix it in post...first 5 shot in JPG....6,7,8 were RAW to test it out.

#1 - Two black eyes and control of the puck...

#2 - This ones a little oof...back checking. Through the glass.

#5 - Sure you can beat us in goals but I can put you in the boards...

#6 - Goalie lets a rebound out front....

All really good shots. The goalie's eyes has to be my fave though. Such a tough task to get both clear and unobstructed like that.

Thanks, it was definately a learning curve night...tried a lot of settings, looking through the results though there just wasn't any that were "perfect"....goalie shots are usually my favorite, buddy ran that one through Noise Ninja and looked pretty good, might have to test a print with it.

Hockey is so much fun to shoot. Players that move nice and smooth and just when the shot is right they jerk completely out of frame. Nobody looking the same direction for more than a split second. Cages/visors to obstruc and reflect the faces. Horrible indoor lighting with a major need for fast shuters and wide open apature. Oh joy

I find shooting the goalies the easiest simply because they don't move near as much and are predictable. Otherwise it can be a real crap shoot. You did very well though, some great captures.

Good stuff - you go the white nailed, proving again that the boards and the ice are not always as white as our eyes let us think. (paraphrased quote from Dennis) The shiners on the Crunch captain are a hoot.

You sure can see the difference the glass makes, still well done though !

Yea, Cman - those are delights! Least a good challenge! Goalies are definately the easiest, you just time out a good slide on a cross ice pass and slap shot or something.

Darsk - all the WB was in post, I got home and they looked very strange. Dennis is definately right, the ice is not as white as it might seem.

Mike - Nice work. I enjoyed these.

BTW, I'm working on CSM regarding NCAA hockey, but still no action for NHL or IHL/AHL. Will keep at it.

You shooting the Winter Classic today?

I wish I was but never got a response, looks sweet and look at all the room to shoot!! I see a bunch of photogs and PLENTY of room. Man I wish they would have tried to set it up. Not sure if theres any holes or not, doesn't look like it on the outside and TTG looks bad on TV. There seems to be a photo pit on each side of the bench with holes though and they look kind of empty. DAMMIT!

I'll email you some info as well to not make it public :)

Listen to the crowd! How cool is this? I agree, the photos from this game would be great! Rival your last NFL Snow Bowl game, huh? This is a LOT more interesting than watching any warm weather bowl game, especially since there's 6" a fresh snow on the ground here and watching any sport where they're in shirt sleeves is just plain depressing!

I got a buddy covering the Gator Bowl, and he just emailed me at halftime and says it's 72 degrees and sunny.

I see a bunch of empty holes needing a filling by my 70-200! Really wish I was there, and now they're talking about the photographsers holes since a puck slipped through one, ha. I saw a few emtpies and it's depressing! Buddy of mine is at this game shooting for the local rag.

72 and sunny, can't wait for that weather next spring/summer.

EDIT: Also, nice setup with the remote in the back of the net - lemme guess - Getty!

Argh, I TiVo'ed the game, and even added 30 minutes for the extra time needed to keep the ice clean, but even this wasn't enough, and I missed the shoot-out. Man, I hate it when this happens.

And did you see the puck hit the photographer's hole in the 3rd period? Hope it didn't ruin anyone's glass!!!

As for your shots, excellent all around. Some appear to be a bit dark or underexposed at first glance, but I like the way you shot them regardless. And how big of a hockey town is Rochester anyway?

Yup, it happened twice actually about 10 mins apart I believe. During warmups one time I felt a puck hit my lens, looked up and Danny Briere was there tapping it so he could give a puck to a kid. I'd hate to take a puck to the glass, or baseball, or anything for that matter.

I actually thought the same thing about the exposure but went back into the RAW files and tried to "fix" them and it just ended up making them worse no matter what I did. Zoom into the skin tone and they look alright but there seems to be something off to. Hopefully next game will be able to get better settings, tried a ton and started to get on the right path....I hope.

As for Rochester, not sure...it's not the most surging area for sports but being they are the Sabres affiliate I think that helps. The problem is the Sabres told them this year they're done and not happy in Rochester. They want an affilliate all there own (Rochester is shared with the Panthers), so see how that works. Hopefully they'll stick around, this area is losing a lot of businesses because of the insane NY taxes and business laws, of course that means teams are struggling too and we already may have lost one.
