View Full Version : Should I extend the Maintenance Period for 10D?

I Just received a letter from Canon informing me that the maintenance period of my camera is about to expire and that I can extend the service for a sum of around $220USD.

From what the letter reads I will be entitled to unlimited service support and the replacement of specified spare parts at no extra cost.

I've taken my camera in for servicing only once this past year (which I was billed for) and that was to remove some dust.

Does anyone think it's worth the $220 to extend the warranty or would it likely cost less to replace a specified spare part should one get damaged?

Extended maintenance contracts are designed to make money.

Most electronic devices that contain flaw will fail quickly.

Every electronic deivce I have every had has either needed fixing with in the frist couple of months or worked for years.

My recomendation is not worth it, don't get it.

Thanks Steven, that's sound logic to me!

It's just insurance really. They make money off a lot of people, and that pays for the repairs on the few that come in. The remainder is almost pure profit (less marketing, book keeping and such.)

If you want the "peace of mind" then go ahead, but I think a better option is to put that money in the bank. Your bank, your account...

I never thought of it that way, interesting!

Knowing me, I'll probably end up blowing that money on the 100mm macro I've been eyeing

-Thanks for the insight.
