Hi all,

Don't post too often in the sports section, mostly observation. Thought I'd share a few of my best from the last few week.

I am a freelancer for a local weekly paper in addition to a photographer for my school (Stcloudstate.edu) and Prep Sports Online.

The first hockey game I shot for my school, St Cloud State. Women's hockey, they lost 8-2 .. ouch

Great timing on the hockey photos. You also nailed the exposure which is not easy with hockey.

Honestly, hockey is easier than football and other sports played during daylight. The light can't change too much in hockey, and if it does, it's predictable. In any given hockey arena, I set the shutter speed so that I don't have many highlights on the histogram, then go from there.

My first two football games for prep sports online were a little harder because the sun would be setting on half the field, leaving the other in shadow. As a result, I learned to either adjust manual quickly or use Av/Tv.

Thanks for your feedback!

So, did you shoot the Hockey in Tv?

Nope, manual. Mostly 1600, 1/400 @ 2.8.

The lighting conditions at my school's rink at very consistent.

The St Cloud State rink has really nice lighting, I can actually use a teleconverter while shooting there.

I shoot Hockey in various rinks. What I did was, I previewed all my shots from each rink in Zoombrowser EX. I used Preview mode in Zoombrowser, to see the shot settings. I then wrote down the best shot settings for each rink, on a card which sits in my camera bag. So no more guess work, anymore. Our Home rink, that our High School plays on is a nightmare. Center Ice is Dim, and the ends of the rink are bright. That makes some intresting shots when you are tracking a player, skating up the ice. To add a little more sting, the lighting color cast from that rink are, a blue and brown.

Nice Shots BTW, sorry....

I shoot M 1600, 1/400 @ 2.8 also..

Those are great hockey shots! I have a xti with a sigma 70-200 f2.8, and I am having a very hard time getting good shots on any setting, your lighting was great, I am going to give your settings a try at my sons next game, thanks for the information!
