Challenge #104 - Wheels (but not car wheels)
************************************************** *****************
RESULTS!

Not as many entries as I had hoped, given that wheels are everywhere, but thanks to those who entered - all interesting variations on the theme. I'm not going to critique every entry but here are the winners:

FIRST: urcunina for "One vehicle, Four types of wheels". This reminds me of one of those old Norman Rockwell illustrations and the eye is immediately caught by all the wheels - which was indeed the subject. I hope you'll tell us the story behind this one before you take over the job of the next challenge.

SECOND: PaulB for "Weather Wheel". You did a good job getting sufficient depth of field to illustrate this complex looking instrument.

THIRD: BBoi for "Neon Mouse Scroll-Wheel". Just had to give you a place for this sharp and colorful shot even though it's a bit of a stretch to recognise a wheel. If "Mice" had been the subject this would have won :-)

Again - thanks to all and good luck with the next challenge, urcunina!
************************************************** ******************
Arguably mankind's greatest invention - the wheel! Singular or plural, anything goes as long as it's not a car wheel (I can't face judging the merits of various fancy mag wheels on hotrods etc ;)). I'll look for well composed creative shots that speak for themselves, not needing an explanation.

And please - read the RULES! It would be a shame to have to disqualify a good photo just because it's over the 200k file size limit or not exactly 800 pixels on the longest side. And please give your entry a title in the subject line.

They need to change these rules because there's no way to be EXACTLY 800 pixels and less than 200 kB. It's either one or the other.

Your exact same pic at 40k - the more black you have in a pic, the smaller you can get it without loosing too much detail. at 286k, the one you posted would not make it to final judging.

Sorry for the interruption folks.

Guess my 'play' on words was a little too much. I actually thought I'd get points for that ... too subtle I guess.

anyway, congrats on the Win-Place-Show'rs :D

Winner - car with wheels ...

*confused ....

LOL, anyway - well done on a great shot :) it's surprising how hard it actually is to find wheels when not on a car as most are hidden from sight. I actually thought the watch by danpass would have gotten it... crackin' shot that one !

Well done to all - looking forward to seeing what urcunina can come up with for the next challenge :)

Thanks both, but I do agree with teekay on this one, the mouse wheel is a bit on the obscure side to be obvious - damned if I could find any better looking wheels around though, and any closer, people wouldn't have known what the whole object was, let alone recognize the wheel in it LOL ...

"danpass - 'whiny' lol ... well yeah, trying not to be, but overall confused as a tractor is till a 4 wheeled vehicle - perhaps I AM being too picky though. All said and done it's by the by, and a nice shot deserving of a win ... Should have taken a shot of a bus going by or something hehe .... *ouch*

Thanks teekay.

The confusion comments about the choice are understandable to a point. It shows how it can be difficult to write a challenge description that is totally unambiguous. In this case, I actually checked the definition of "car" and tractor was not a included. Interesting, a railroad car was...

My favorites were the weather wheel and danpass set-up.

I will attempt to make this week's challenge unambiguous, however, I'm not going as far as to get a legal check:)

#105 will be posted today.

Urcunina's vehicle is very clearly a tractor, not a car (which is a passenger vehicle primarily designed for roads). I checked the definition to be sure before I judged.

Sorry if some people didn't agree with my choices, but that's the way of all these challenges - it's the judge's individual preference that decides and there's no "right" or "wrong" result. I like entering but, as any winner can tell you, judging is not an easy job as there's often at least one person who feels their entry (sometimes a really lousy photo!) should have won

Agreed, though I didn't even spot it was a tractor till it was pointed out. Judging is far from easy; and, sorry if 'confused' came over as a whine - I took the car in it's global sense of 'vehicle with wheels' rather than a specific mode of wheeled transport. I will read more carefully in future and adhere strictly to what's written. Apologies if the confusion caused offense. it was unintentional.

Don't know if anyone else was offended but certainly not me - I've developed thicker skin after entering a good number of these contests and then judging a few ;)

A problem, though, is we live all around the world and meanings can differ. For example in some countries a railroad car is called a railway carriage.

I'm just glad nobody entered a fine shot of a rail car/carriage wheel as I admit I had never thought of that possibility and I would then have had a difficult decision to make

Teekay, you did a great job in my opinion as you always do. You are a skillful photographer, and a great judge. I appreciate for one your participation and leadership here.
