From what I've read on the forums that is a very nice lens. Do you have a confortable couch?

Awesome!

Always have dreamed of one, but I could never justify it as I am a hobbiest :p

You forgot to check the box stating, "Don't print prices on the packing slip." A printed price will only attract the wife's attention.

Grentz, I certainly agree with you that it's a fair chunk of coin for a lens for a hobbiest.
And I'm about as far from being a Pro as one can possibly get.
But then again, I probably can't justify 95% of the stuff i get for my other hobbies either, so i'm not going to let logic get between me and this lens.
Happy New Year (at f/1.2 !) sgamuk.

Also am hobbyist. My first lens was the 24-105 and I thought the shots I get from it was the best color, saturation and sharpness wise.

The 2nd was the 100-400 for more reach and that too has given me great pics best color, saturation and sharpness wise.

Then comes the 85 1.8. This lens has changed the way I looked at my pics. It's simply different from my zooms. My pics has now dimension and it'll be lengthy to explain. I sold my 100-400 to get the 16-35L and b/c it's simply not for me. I changed my mind and went for the 35L and 135L instead. These lenses produce images that are very especial vs my zooms. I still consider myself a newb but, I enjoy looking at every shots from these lenses. And for me, that alone is priceless...

So, now my 24-105 is the last to see the light. I may sell it pretty soon.

Nice. I bet that was exciting ordering that. "Bill Me Later" stands for "Kill Me Later" once the wife finds out.

I used to think that way too. But you can't take it with you and if it gives you pleasure - go for it. I don't spend my time drinking in bars, chasing women, or gambling - but I do 'collect'. Camera equipment ... for now. Who knows what's next? More woodworking stuff - I don't know.

I'm lucky to have a wife who thinks the same way - enjoy it while you can. We will all grow older (we hope) and you don't want to be sitting around in your old age thinking 'I wish I had done it ...'

OK, enough philosophizing.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Agreed with this philosophy. Sometimes you just have to do it, as hard as that may be just go for it----

My same exact mentality in life...

I am buying this lens b/c it glorifies my personal and family needs. I don't have a plan of becoming a pro and make this hobby for a living. In fact, I use my gears occasionally mostly for family and friends gatherings. The pics that I get from my lenses supplement my being lack of knowledge and experience. The pics are not of PRO quality and of contest type sort of when it comes to composition, but, it captures memories pics that I can be proud of.

Cheers!

lol, i know guys. I have the 24-105 and 100-400 as well which are both pretty pricey  I would love to have the 85 1.2, I was just saying more on the spending yet another grand (and a half) on more glass is a bit much right now for me

But if you can swing it awesome! You have me drooling. Make sure to post some shots when you get it!

See my sig... ;-) You'll have nightmare and restless sleep thinking about it. Just go for it.

Here's my .02c...

If you use it for some months and you need some cash, the most you can lose is $150-$200 if you sell it. For that little amount, you have enjoyed it and scratched your itch. In addition, the pics that you have taken using it has already paid that price. Those are the memories that you can't buy... ;-)

OR

Opt for Bill Me Later. You can save 6 month worth of interest and you have 6 months to save up. Even if you have cash, keep it in the bank or invest it for 6 months esp for this big amount. Don't use your CC yet. After 6 months, pay it in full either with cash or CC. Save lotta interest this way. A penny save is a penny richer...

Same here..! Since I had the 85 1.8, I notice I don't use my 24-105 that often anymore. My favs was the 35L and the 85 1.8... but, the 85 is the 1st one I grab most of the time... I'm excited for the 85 MKII;-)
