View Full Version : More misses with 24-70 than with 35?

I have been using my 24-70 and notice that I frequently get more missed focus shots than with my 35. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong/differently. Could it just be due to the 2.8 v 1.4? I don't really think that would be it because it seems the focus winds up somewhere other than my focal point. I took over 200 shots with it today and literally wound up with 5 that were keepers. Not good. I never have this issue with the 35L. It's very frustrating. I will put some pics up tomorrow as I'm going to go to bed... my big New Year's Eve celebration, lol. Here's one that seemed okay. I will have to post a crappy one tomorrow. I focused on my son's eyes and his face kept coming out blurry. I'm like - am I going blind or something?? Very strange.

I know it doesn't really help not having one of them posted, but I'll try to explain my settings for the baddies. I was in the woods on a path with my kids taking a bike ride. I was using my pop-up for fill (I know, I know) and was likely using an ISO at 100 and my shutter speed was around 200. My kids were sitting still on their bikes for the pic. I was using my center focus point and re-composing (another bad, I know). Is focusing more difficult for the lens at some lengths more than others? i.e. 24 v 70? I know that sounds weird, but I just am really at a loss here. Does the 24-70 have any unique things going on that other lenses don't (other than the weight, opposite zoom, etc.)?

You need to post a crappy one ... I suspect it is shake. It is a heavy lens and rather slow compared to a 1.4 if you are shooting in shade at ISO 100.

In the woods
ISO 100
1/200 shutter speed
What mode were you shooting in?
Something doesn't sound right here.

Shutter priority - then I switched to aperture priority - I didn't want the flash to overexpose with fill. We were sort of half in the sun, half out in the trees. I did a lot of switching around, so I have to find the right exif. I've sent the bad images to the recycle bin, so I'll have to try to pull them back out.
