View Full Version : Reccommend a good walkaround lense

I have 300D kit and have recently bought the 70-200 f4L and am now looking for a good flexible zoom, the 24-70 f2.8L would be perfect in my opinion with the exception of weight & cost. So the dilemma is should I accept the high cost or is there any other zooms that can produce standards similair to the 70-200. I have looked at primes and fancy the 50mm f1.4 USM although I reckon a decent walkround lense would be better suited to my requirements at the moment. Thanks.

I have to recomend the 1.8 version as it is only $70 and nearly equally as awesome.

for a walkaround lens you'd want a zoom. I was gonna say the 24-70, especially if you want something that give you results like your 70-200.

I have been very happy with my 28-75 Tamron 2.8 as a walkaround. Very nice pics and no complaints.

I recently upgraded my 70-200 F4 to a 70-200 2.8 (non-IS) but found F4 a very good walkaround as well for things like Zoo's and fairs. The 2.8 is a bit heavier but I needed it for a couple of the shots I was trying to get.

Something close to the EF 24-70L but costing less... mmmm..... :?

Try the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di XR. Much lighter and much, much cheaper. It's also not quite as good, but it's not far off!

lol

My walkaround lens is the 70-300mm DO IS

But that's just me :)

I usually leave my 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS on the camera when I'm "walking around". It is a very versatile zoom lens. It is good quality but not too heavy. And IS is a bonus! :)

My Tokina 28-70 f/2.8!!! I tried same Canon 24-70/f2.8 L and CAN't tell the difference! Sometimes Canon use its brand name as pure speculation and puts "L" on very mediocre lenses. After Looooong research I am glad I bought Tokina.

The 24/28-70 is a good choice, what about the 17-40? considering the crop factor, its not that bad. It's nearly $400-500 cheaper then the 24/28-70 with pretty much the standard L quality.

If you are shooting outdoors, the f4 should not be of any concern, unless you want some access to less depth. I guess it depends really if the 40x1.6 is long enough for you or not.

Cheers.

Can't go far wrong with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di XR, I've had it now for just over a month & it's rarely off my 10D. Very impressed with the results, very sharp!!

If you don't mind a used lense, you could pickup the canon 35-135. I have used one for several years and while its not an "L", you can get great results. Not as good as my 70-200 2.8L, but works great for walking around. You can pick one up on ebay usually.

I certainly wouldn't want to walk too far with my 70-200 2.8L on my camera!

I agree about the 70-200 2.8 not being a walkaround. Just got mine and pretty heavy when compared with the F4 model. Lucky it comes with a carrying case :-)

BTW, I went with the Tamron 28-75 due to cost, it's a 2.8, sharp and it is also an OK macro.

Take a look through the new EF-S 17-85 IS. It is a really nice range, and it is probably small enough to enable you to use the built-in flash.

The reviews should start coming in the next couple weeks. I'm hoping it performs well.

Definitely try the 17-85 IS . If it's too expensive or you don't like it for some reason, you just can't beat the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for under $400. It's a perfect weight and build to balance out the camera for a walkaround lens, maybe a bit long, but the 24-x won't buy you much there. It IS a 2.8 constant aperture, so put that against the 17-85, it'll be a brigher lens in most situations, especially those where you can't use the IS.

I think CDS has a walkabout lens now... 200mm f/1.8... plenty of quality and plenty of weight. Except that he probably has to store it in a bank vault overnight. No, I take that back. Nobody would try to steal it... unless they had a truck.

I tend to keep the 17-40 on the camera, will shortly be getting the 50 1.4 and that may become the "walkabout"

It is an EF-S lens, just like the Drebel kit lens. It only works on cameras that allow the lens to fit deeper into the body than the original EF lens spec. Right now, the only cameras that accept the EF-S lenses are the Drebel and the 20D.

I think it signals a commitment from Canon to stick with the 1.6 crop factor for the consumer and prosumer DSLRs.

Some of Canon's marketing material suggests that the EF-S mount is best for wide-angle lenses, and that does make sense. In order to make lenses that provide the same angle of view of the ultra-wide lenses in the film world, they needed to go to 17mm and even 10mm, and the extra depth into the body facilitates that. Coming out with additional EF-S lenses says that there will be cameras to use them for some time to come. So I see it as a good thing.

My 2 cents.

I'd say it's a bad thing and a very retrograde step. One of the often claimed advantages of the EOS system is that any EF lens will work on any EOS body. I remember other manufacturers picking up a lot of stick here (and on other forums) for their incompatible lens/body combinations. It seems that with the appearance of EF-S Canon is now going down the same path.

My walkabout lens is the Canon 28-105 USM.

I'll second that... Town and "party" walk around: EF28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM $150 used or under $250 new... I'll probably replace it with an IS but I haven't had many problems getting good sharp pix... IS will not hurt!

Light, quick focusing and quiet... Nice range too... Just below my Canon 100-400/IS... Just above 10-22 or 12-24mm that will replace the kit lens as my WA...

I honestly can not beleive how heavy this thing is... it is purley a 'pod lens.. It weighs 6.6 lbs... my 500mm "monster" weighs 6.8 lbs...

Ditto too! I think it is a little and only a little soft wide open, but the images get really sharp around f8. Whenever I can only bring one lens, like when I was at the DMZ 2 weeks ago, I take that with me. I wish I had brought the 70-200 with the extender so that I could have gotten a little further into North Korea. I digress.

The 28-135 is an AWESOME walkaround lens.

You can always cut the end piece off. Canon should sell a hacksaw as an accessory. Canon EF 17-85 IS with SB-854 Hacksaw. I'll wait to see if this gets launched at Photokina.

for a walkaround lens you'd want a zoom.

Maybe or maybe not. My "walkaround" lens:
- should be lightweighted for me to walkaround;
- is a lens for me that I've no primary intention to take photos.

Therefore, I don't need to take my "best" quality lens. And I wouldn't mind for any "missed" shots...

Since the original poster wants a "prime", I agree with Timmy for the 50/1.8 as it's cheap, lightweighted and good optics.

Well I just purchased the 24-70 f2.8 and the results from it are amazing, even better I think than my 17-40 and 70-200 f4.0 lense. I use film so crop factor isn't a problem. I love the 24-70 it's fantastic, every canon shooter should own one.

Next on my list is the 85 f1.2 and an Eos 1v, I'm stil gonna get a digital but will wait until I can get a cheap 1d mk11 in a couple of years time.

Depends on what you're shooting, and where you are! With the 28-135 on the D30 / D60 / 10D / 20D, I am happy to trade some wide angle for more telephoto. I believe that this lens is one of Canon's real strong points. :)
