I have been planning on getting a ID Mk II when the price comes down to under $4k.
I see that the camera is available now without much of a delay at a few places.
I realize that responders to this question will be giving opinions, as opposed knowing what the market will do.

Not sure how much it will effect the price. I think the price will drop but not to the level of the 10D has since the release of the 20D. I think the price of the 10D is down around $400 for a new one since the 20D. I would guess abotu the same $400 on the MKII since its a much higher priced camera in the first place.
Ill tell you one thing though, the Nikon looks like a fine piece of equipment.
Cheers.

Not sure if it will have that much effect. The two cameras are competing in some really serious amateur and Pro space, and I am sure that most prospective buyers are in the position of the camera body not being worth as much as the glass they own. It would be such an investment to change that I think the competition element is eliminated.
My 2c, more than willing to be shot down in flames.

I think thus far in the DSLR race Neil's assesment is pretty accurate of how things have been going...
I wonder though if this will remain the case. The first sign was the pricing for the D2H... LESS than Nikons own.. mauch older much slower D1X (still can't figure why that one hasn't gone below the D2H)
We have yet to see exactly how much this camera will cost.. but I think it has been the D2H and MkII that have made the most significant inroads into the high end enthusiast hands Vs. "just the pros" of the 1D, D1X, and 1Ds.
I have to admit I see a prie war brewing.. this D2X if priced less than the 1Ds will FORCE the 1Ds down... (of course if it is out and out replaced as we expect I guess that's no issue)
Still.. it seems that Nikon is now moving fast enough to have an impact on Canon's bottom line.. it's been a few years since that was the case.
