In my view, two major reasons to buy the 20D:
1- Non-professional sports photography:
You get the 5fps, and the extra 1.6 multiplication factor of the sensor. The 1D MkII's price is only justified IMHO if you're paid for what you do with it, and, the speed of the 20D is closer to the 1DMkII's world.
2- The EF-S mount, with the 10-22mm lens:
That would be ultra wide angle photography, at a fraction of the cost of a 1Ds plus a 16-35mm lens. That is, if you choose to stick to Canon-brand lenses to get that kind of focal length, and not depend on a Russian brand 8mm lens to get close to 16mm..Keep in mind that the 1DMkII still doesn't have a full sensor either, and that is understandable, since an ultra wide angle lens is not a sports thing.
Reason number "2" is why I primarily got the 20D, and set the 10D aside (for now).
-The 8MP really is not a huge leap from the 10D's 6MP, and I doubt that more detail is solely really worth switching from a 10D.
-Noise levels are not that revolutionary, after close inspection.
-"AA" batteries operation is a welcome feature.
I simply think of the 1DMkII as, say, a Ferrari, and a 1Ds as a Rolls-Royce, and the 20D as maybe a Subaru WRX; a compromise between speed and full functionality :!:
