We've raised the attachment bytesize 50% to 150KB and maximum allowed embedded image size to 1024x1024.

Updated image size rules are in http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=194511

Damn

I better go buy a screen with a bigger resolution so I can see the new sized pictures without scrolling...

Gah... All my shots on EE are either 800px or 1200px. Now I'll have to resize them.

Good news on the dimension. Makes things so much easier on my high-res monitors.

Not sure I approve, but then i am a poor sod with only a 1280x1024 pixel monitor.

The problem is not really in horizontal images, but vertical ones. It is not possible for a 1024pix vertical image to fit on my screen, and even on larger widescreen monitors the vertical resolution is often 1024 or less.

Michael

Leo, Its much easier, and convenient to have to scroll a little bit vertically than horizontally.

I certainly approve!

Now, Pekka, *ahem* Bigger Avatars?

Love the 1024 horizontal....but the 800 vertical was much nicer.

It's a whole lot easier for those with monitors a few years old, and reduces download time.

Most great images don't need to be huge to be appreciated.

I agree ... I was happy with 800 and only started posting them that size last month or so. Used to do 600 and was fine with that too. Am much more pleased about the 150kb rise limit. A very good move. Thanks Chief ;-)

I can't find a requirement for filesize if an embedded image is hosted off-site. Is there a filesize limit for these? I can't think of any reason for there to be, but I just want to make sure.

You are right there is no maximum file size rule. Let your conscience be your guide.

Think of the people with slow internet connections and let your conscience keep the files as small as practical :)

Hi All,

I am new to photography and the digital world. I have Adobe Element 5.0 and really don't know how to use it yet (still learning).

I want to post a picture for someone to critic. My question is how do I know if my picture is 1024X1024.

Thanks,
Roger

Welcome, Roger.

It doesn't have to be that big -- that is just the limit on how big it is allowed to be.

When you have an image in Elements, click on "Image" on the menu bar and select "Image Size".

I'll 2nd that. People on broadband just seem to forget about us poor dialup users - not everyone in Australia is in a financial, or physical location to get broadband (and thus stuck on dialup). Try and remember us please and be polite and put 56k warning in the title if it contains lots of large images...

Great idea and well mannered

you'd be surprised at how few people do it. It seems that those typically on broadband seem to have an attitude of "stuff those on dialup, it's not my problem".

Stuff those with Canon battery problems....and dial up.

:D

Seriously though I honestly do forget about dial-uppers quite often. I tried to make my website as slow-connection friendly as possible but as for images on here, no offense but this is a website for photography and I really do want my photos to look their best, connection speeds be damned. No one forces you to wait for my pics to DL. I have an action that saves pics for POTN at 8/10 quality because I abhor compression artifacts.

I admit I forget to do that . What would you say is the cutoff for when you would want to see a 56k warning in the title.

Interesting question. Certainly download speed would be a factor if there were several images.

I wonder how long it would take to download 8 1024X1024 images on a dialup connection. I suspect a long, long time.

You do not need a LARGE file to avoid artifacts at all. Do not make the file UNNECESARILY LARGE, remember, it is for screen display, not for printing.

And for that matter, I can allow a few artifacts to show if that helps to my friends in the forum.

Save for web at jpgHIGH (low compression) do not introduce artifacts an produces reasonably small files.

Question: Can the limits for avatars be increased somewhat? Most other forums allow 100x100px images, and after wrestling with a PNG (and eventually saving it as an 8 bit image!!), it seems a bit odd to increase all the limits except avatars. The moderators are all going around with nice big ones (I've even seen a 200px wide avatar, which actually breaks the barriers of the profile box on the left of posts), so having a bit bigger in terms of file size etc (say, 100x100, 15KB or something) wouldn't hurt, would it?

Too long. I was forced to endure dialup for quite a while recently - and found that the threads with big pix had to be skipped. If the picture was taking too long to open, I reversed out and moved on.
