How annoying can they get? They need to get the f*** out of the way!!
Out of the way of what? The game's over...
And they can't possibly be getting good pictures because they don't even look at/through the camera when they shoot.
I'd imagine that those guys are getting paid for what they do. If they're getting paid, odds are someone think the shots are good enough to pay for.
I dunno', I really fail to see what the problem is...

I think the term they use for it is the "scrum":

And yeah, obviously a lot of the (attempted) shots are of the spray and pray variety.

Oh and as he points out in that article, there have been a lot of scrum related articles posted there over the years (going back to 1999 and "We nearly killed John Elway"):

http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1400
Note that the title of that first article is "RANT: Ban the Scrum", so it appears that at least some of the photographers don't like the situation any more than anyone else.

Not really any different than paparazzi is it? Some of them make decent money. They just hope for a keeper or 2 in the bunch, mostly 'spray and pray'.

It's ridiculous. I mean, how do they get in focus when they're running around like chickens with their heads cut off and not even looking at the camera as they aimlessly shoot away?
A lot of these shots are taken with a flash, and with the lenses stopped down to increase the DOF. Frequently they will even put the camera on a monopod.
These are also called "Hail Mary" shots 'cuz of the "prayer" involved.
And, yes, most of these guys are getting paid to take these shots, and until everybody is kept off the field so that nobody gets these shots, you will continue to have scrums like this.
Imagine covering the game and having your photo editor ask you why you didn't get a shot of the two coaches embracing after the game when AP/Getty/Reuters/SI all got the shot...it's the sports shooter version of being a paparazzo, like it or not.

Have you seen those crazy photographer types that run onto the field and get right up in the faces of players and coaches as soon as the game ends? And they always hold their cameras up over everyone's head snapping pictures.
How annoying can they get? They need to get the f*** out of the way!! They look so idiotic how they run around people in circles. And they can't possibly be getting good pictures because they don't even look at/through the camera when they shoot.
Those guys are making money. Good money. And if they don't rush, they don't make money. No money.

Well what a sucky industry. Who the heck are these goons paying cameraman and thus makin' 'em do these stupid things?
I think there probably happy to be doing the job. It's not like these guys are pimped out and beaten up when they don't get the shot.

Right or wrong it's never going to stop.
It's a bit much in some cicumstances but trying to police it just isn't going to happen.

Well they look like idiots. And exactly how money do they make, anyway?
Enough that they keep doing it despite being berated online.

Cameraman takes photo in scrums
Cameraman gets paid buy editor/magazine company
Magazine company prints photos
Magazine goes on newstands
Public buys magazine
....all comes down to the consumer. The "goons" as you like to call them. Public doesnt buy, company doesnt get paid, editor doesnt get paid, cameraman doesnt get paid.
So its seems like YOU could be a "goon".
By that definition Im a "goon", hell Im a "goon" with a camera that would get into a scrum.:D

Don't be so sure. I went to a packed fan appreciation day at AT&T Park (where the SF Giants play) and couldn't get a clear shot because of the crowded conditions. I ended up lifting my 1D high above my head, point in the general direction and wait for the AF confirmation beep before hitting the shutter.
Here's one shot I got by doing that.

I suspect those guys on the field--because of their experience--have an excellent chance of getting a good shot. I further suspect that many forum members would love to be down on the field of an NFL game and be one of those guys you say need to get the bleep outta the way. I know I would :)

Well considerating what a 1DMKII/III can do, I'll say within a few second the Photog can get a few hundred shots to choose from.
