I am looking for a good landscape lense for my digital rebel and want something equivalent to a 28mm lense for "normal" cameras. That would give 17.5mm for the digital rebel.
Have any of you any experience with TOKINA 17MM F/3.5 AT-X 17AF PRO ASPH? You think it would be fully compatiple? I heard that some third party lenses are not.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

I've heard that is a very good wide angle lens with no compatibility problems yet.
The Sigmas seem to have more compatibility problems than the Tamrons or Tokinas

The Tokina is a very good lens according to this review (http://www.seittipaja.fi/data/Pontification/b_Photography/d_Tokina_AT-X_17mm/a_Tokina_AT-X_17_mm.html). I myself was debating over a couple of wide-angle lenses a few months ago, and in the end I went with the Sigma 15-30 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37783), which I found used in excellent condition and at a very nice price. So far I have been very happy with this lens.
Please note that there is a EF-S 10-22mm lens available from Canon - it's not very cheap, but it sure is the widest lens to use on 1.6 crop body - 16-35mm eqiuv. to 35mm full frame. It's very new lens and we have not seen any reviews yet, but it might be worth to wait and see how this lens performs.

The sigma 15-30 looks tempting. I think it supposedly has superior image quality than the 17-40L, with the exception of flare.
Also, I think the sigma 15-30 is fairly big, no?

Well, actually the optical quality is not something exceptional. I don't have the 17-40 to compare it to the Sigma, but I doubt that the Canon L quality will be any worse than that from Sigma.
About the size - the Sigma 15-30 is indeed fairly big, but surprisingly not so heavy. It balances pretty well with the 10D. Here are some pictures of this lens attached to a camera body (as found on the Web) -
