The interesting thing, getting back on topic (!), is that I actually have the body now set default to 3 FPS (multiple boxes but not on "H" for those of you who don't read manuals), as I don't use the 6.5 FPS in most cases.
As for all you who have kindly contributed to this, uhmm, as Mark likes to call it, "lovefest", I will not forget. Your names are marked.

my first time checking this thread...and i aint reading thru all of it - why is this ongoing? has anyone found the problem/solution?Seems he missed the minor detail that the 40D has, like the 1D3, two drive speeds in addition to the one-shot setting; he was in "Low". As he's generally one of our more experienced and technically-savvy members, he's suffering from a lot of "RTFM" razzing.

Hi Lightrules, I got my 40D in 2 weeks ago, and I know it sounds silly, but I have read the manual over about 2.5 times, finding some nuances I didn't catch the first time through.Considering the financial investment I would HIGHLY recommend it for thorough reading :) You might find it interesting to know that depending on the mode/resolution shooting...you can get about 1000 continuous/consecutive burst shots. And btw an 80x CF is more than fast enough for the 40D.

I suppose one could also try reading the manual. But then, where's the fun in that, when you can start a thread like this one! :D
I say: ask questions first! Not only will you eventually learn the answers, but the community will get a great deal of entertainment from it. Everyone wins! :)

EVERYONE REPEAT AFTER ME: LIGHTRULES IS AN IDIOT!
Thanks JC4, you've solved my problem. Ridiculous, and flat out embarrassing. I just hope PetKal doesn't see this thread.
6.5 FPS is a lovely sound...
[FWIW, my 20D doesn't have this different mode so I never even thought about it.]
Hey, my friend, if it makes you feel any better, that same thing got me one day. I'm a settings freak though and I started going through everything (CF) before I realized that there was a H speed burst rate and a slow. Took me a long time to figure it out though. Half of the basketball game I was shooting was over.
I actually have found out though that with basketball, I like shooting with the One-shot mode. Seems like I get better shots that are nice and crisp instead of just half way decent ones that are a little soft. Might just be the fact that I concentrate more on getting that one good shot instead of a series of shots.
But anyway, don't feel bad. I'm sure most of us have done similar things. I know I have.

Just keep it up. You know Nikon said they have something like that in the D60. You can combine 100 shots of stop-action to create a movie in the camera.
You think Amazon wrote it or the company wrote that?

well, it's never happened to me. ;)
But today, I messed with the custom functions of my 580 and had no idea what I did. I was dying for a manual. I can't figure out how the heck to get the zoom off manual. I was ready to smash the darn thing.
How goes it, lighty?

Brain Fart, it's going fairly well, thank you. Actually, I went to one of LA's large photo stores today (Samys in LA) and asked the sales guy if I could play with their demo 40D. He said, "Sure. It's on sale today with no sales tax. Here you go." So I set it to continuous shooting mode but not on "H". Then I asked him how come it wasn't shooting at 6.5 FPS. He took the camera, looked at some of the controls, fired off some shots, couldn't figure it out, and said, "Hmmmm. We get these defective units here and there. Let me grab a new one." I told him not to worry about it and thanked him for the time.
See, it's not only me, dooooods!

I just got the 40D this weekend and I noticed that my max burst rate is not 6.5 fps !?!? I don't feel like reading all 28 pages, so what's wrong with my camera?
I'm just kidding.. I know you can change the drive mode to high or something like that. Read pg 81 of the Manual.

LightRules,
You are putting yourself in the same category as the store salesman? ???
Oh boy.......... things aren't looking good.....
(it is possible a store salesman can have very good experience, however it is also possible they don't know SH__.....)
Sounds like you better read the manual again

How did I check? Pres the info button and check the time of the shots, looking for 6 shots with the same (to the second) time stamp.

Ok, I'm officially, completely, out of it -- I had no idea there was a comic strip, so I thought the Tupperville thread was about Tupperware parties related to ducks, or something like that.
Now I know.
I have, what, a few dozen comics to read? There goes another night.
