I have a feeling that the reference you are making is that HP calculators are ridiculously not user-friendly (just like Yoda's speaking)? What not user-friendly? Works just like pencil and paper. You put down the two numbers, then you do whatever you need to with them. I don't know many people who'll work out a problem by writing the first number down, multiplying it by the second number (without writing it out) and only then writing down both the second number and the answer. And they're infinitely easier to work with if you need to handle more than 2 numbers at a time.

It is dying a slow painful death.
Very slow. The kind that make glaciers look like Formula 1 cars in comparison.
And very painful. For some people. At least, for one person in particular. And in particular, for his ribs. From the large amounts of, erm, ribbing. :-D
Oh, and for other people, too. From the large amounts of laughing. :-)

LR, I think you'll be fine with the 50D -- just remember that the Green Box mode is the best all-around setting for everything, including testing the fps, and you won't have any problems!

There is also creative auto which explains everything slowly and in simple english with a patronising voice. It also pats you on the back when you take nice photos!

Yes, but the 50D is only spec'd for 6.3 FPS, so then we would have an entirely different RTM route to go.

"Of course it's not hitting 6.5 FPS...it's only spec'd for 6.3!"
The real question that I'm sure keeps people up at nights is: when LR gets his hands on a 1DmkIII (or equivalent), will the resulting thread be entitled "1DmkIII Burst Rate Not Hitting 6.5 FPS", or "1DmkIII Burst Rate Not Hitting 10 FPS"?

First shot taken at :01.231, next at :01.389, next at :01.549, and so forth. Less than one full second between the first shot and the seventh (:01.231-:02.189).

It could have been if they used this website: http://www.online-stopwatch.com/full-screen-stopwatch/

I have an actual OT serious question.
Does the 40D actually deliver 6.5 FPS?
I noticed that the 50D is rated what, 6.3?
Yeah, thats's right, and only 3fps when in the slower burst mode, like the 40D I think.... I'm sure LR can clarify.

Less than one full second between the first shot and the seventh (:01.231-:02.189).Actually, 2.349-1.231 seconds elapsed while shooting seven shots. The first doesn't count, that's just the starting point.
So in 1.118 seconds the camera makes seven shots, which gives 0.1597 seconds between the shots, in average. Since 1/0.1597 is 6.26, that ends up being exactly at the specification for the 50D.

Why doesn't the first shot count?
Because you can't take into account the delay between pressing the shutter and the shot actually being taken. All you have is the shot.
_aravena

So the 40D actually takes 7FPS but technically takes 6FPS.
runninmann
14th of September 2008 (Sun), 15:31
Okay. So, from the 2nd shot to the 8th shot (7 exposures) :01.389 - :02.349 = :00.960. > 7fps.
S.Horton

So, does this mean it never would have mattered what LR did, the FPS would never be 6.5?
That would mean this entire thread is moot.
_aravena
14th of September 2008 (Sun), 15:40
No...because he couldn't get it up past 3...he wasn't even able to reach 6.5! He fell short of the extreme and was only mediocre. Poor LR and his manhood.....
I refer to the 40D of course. :D

Okay. So, from the 2nd shot to the 8th shot (7 exposures) :01.389 - :02.349 = :00.960. > 7fps.
You actually would start your count at the time the first shot was taken, but do not count the first shot in your total. Simply starting your count at the second shot and including it would have the same effect as using the first shot.

Why doesn't the first shot count?Because we are talking about a sustained rate, a sequence, not a single shot.
It may be easier to understand if you take it to the extreme. How many shots does it take to determine the possible frame rate, in images per second? Is one shot enough?
No, clearly not, since it's the spacing between the shots that define the frame rate. But you need two shots to determine the time you have to wait for one, the next, to happen. If you used only one, it would seem as the camera is capable of any number of shots during a second, as there's no waiting time from the first shot to the first. They are one and the same.
Or say that the camera would be capable of about one shot per second. You press the trigger and find that within one second, you got two shots. One timed at 0:00, the second at 0:99. So you say that the camera can do two shots per second. But then you forget that it can't take an image at 1:00 as well, as the previous one came only 0:01 before that. With some variation, you may find that the next shot occurs at 2:01, in which case you find that your two shots per second camera suddenly wasn't capable of doing any shot at all during the next second. Which makes sense, as the average then comes out at one per second, as expected.
Likewise, the 40D will sometimes make seven shots within one specific second of real time, but at the expense of being able of "only" six the next second.

Uh, because we're counting from the beginning. You know: 1, 2, 3... implicit is that we start from 0.
Don't want to give offense, but this is something a third grader should know...

There has to be a way to change the title of the thread, right? Change it to "50D Burst Rate Not Hitting 6.5 FPS" and we can all pipe in about how the specs say that it's actually 6.3 FPS and that LR should go back and read the manual again.
