40D Burst Rate Not Hitting 6.5 FPS

Anyone else have an issue with their 40D not anywhere near 6.5 FPS? I've checked everything, set my custom functions to default, HTP off, High ISO Noise Reduction off, high shutter speeds, continuous mode, etcetera, etc.

It must be around 2.5 FPS at most. Something isn't right.

Anyone have any input or am I just missing something? My 20D is smokin' it in the FPS dept.

What aperture, shutter speed and ISo you shooting at? What is the lighting conditions. If these things are right then you have a faulty camera. The camera does what it id designed to do if it is being used in the right conditions.

I've put on my 30F1.4, 1755 f2.8 IS, 100 F2, you name it. Shooting all at f2.8 or so, high shutter speeds of about 1/2000th to 1/4000th, my 20D would be at 5FPS with these settings. The 40D feels like the 5D with its 3FPS. Slow as heck.

I just can't figure it out. And I can't come to believe I got a lemon 40D either.

There are two burst modes on the 30D and 40D, low and high bursts

If you cycle through the drive mode you will see one shot, then the normal graphic for burst, then burst with an H for high.

BTW, I agree though, I was playing with a mates Mk III, and I struggled to take a single shot in high speed burst mode. Sometimes I cant take just one on my 30D. I'm a bit slow.

Perhaps you've noticed that the 40D has problems reaching a full 6.5 frames per second, even when set to "H". I timed mine. It takes that you have it on manual focus, full aperture, short shutter speed (obviously shorter than X-sync at 1/250) and no fancy features like noise reduction etc. turned on. Then I came at least to 6.4 fps.

But this morning I just had to see what could possibly be generating six pages of posts. Well, I read through the whole thing!

I have two comments...
I will make sure any problem I have is not covered in my manual (wherever it is?), and I vote to give LR to "The Good Sport of the Year award for all of 2008 even though it is only 4 days young. You guys are brutal!

No not brutal. But Lightrules is a very well known member and his contributions to this forum have been tremendous. Many of us would use his wonderful comparisons and reviews to determine which lens to buy. It is rather ironic that shortly after he decided to stop doing these reviews that he posts a question such as this.

But I will agree that he is a good sport. I hope that if I ever do something similar I will act as mature as he did.

LR, I really do appreciate your question. I should have a first-time 40D on my doorstep in the next day or two. (Been a xt rebel for too long!) I've been finding all sorts of great info on the 40D from the threads here (as always).

You've contributed to my kingdom of knowledge... for which I'm greatful. As a matter of fact... as a tribute, I have decided to make "finding the H" one of the first things I'll do on power up.

Reading thru the thread... I laughed so hard... it brought tears. Take the overwhelming response... and huge # of views... as a tribute to how much people care about you. Finding an "oh, well... duh" moment with one you admire... simply makes them more real, and us feel a little smarter.

SO, keep asking those questions. I need the helpful info! And maybe a laugh or two! <grin>
