Do you get on the sidelines for sporting events to do photography?
I am a photography "noob," by the way.

You need to talk to the venue and the team. In many cases you need to be sponsored by a reputable media company that has reason to be there. Having a website full of sports pictures doesn't really do it.
Depending on the level of the sport in question, most have a set of criteria for allowing photographers onto sidelines. In some cases the venue may have more stringent criteria than the team. The most restrictive of the two will normally apply.

Without knowing what you are trying to get into it’s kind of hard to give you the answers you might need but here’s what I do. I only cover high school, jr. and pee wee type of events. I do cover them at times for a local paper and I do have a photo Id from said paper. Still at a minimum I ask the coach and the referees to make sure there aren’t going to be any problems and to let them know that I am there and why. Helps them to know I’m not just a relative of one of the players flocking out from the stands.

It is best to gain some experience and look at getting the right equipment. Often you may not be allowed unless you are covering it for a puiblication. Start at a lower level where access is easy and try to pick up some work that way. Then you may slowly progress. It can be a ver competitive market, depepnding on where you're from.
