View Full Version : GKPE (NZ) Event Planning Thread

OK I am going to resurrect a tread from the depths of forum time and space, as the rambling threads are too hard to follow.
This one is for events and outing planning only - NO RAMBLING!
If you are going to plan an outing can you please post it here (you can keep posting the the rambling thread as well but it moves so quickly it might get missed)
First up I am going to update the Big GKPE day outing calendar, not sure what number we are up to so I am going to drop that now, so keeping with the old rule which was:
Second weekend of February, May, August and November. One small change though I would like to suggest, this time we go alternate Saturdays and Sundays. Also caught up with a couple of the guys tonight, we though we would run a replay of GKPE 1, however since that was a sunrise to sunset event, we thought we best leave it until later in the year.
So here is the draft calendar:
Sunday 10 February 2008 - GKPE Day Event
Saturday 10 May 2008 - GKPE Day Event (Replay of GKPE 1? Same time of the year as the original)
Sunday 10 August 2008 - GKPE Day Event
Saturday 9 November 2008- GKPE Day Event
Righto what else is there to add of photographic interest? There is an airshow in Hamilton in a couple of months, I think Tony is planning something in the next couple of days.
Please feel free to add anything of suggest things for day events (we are always needing good ideas for these!)

What about a bbq? We haven't had one in a long time... I can volunteer my place if the weather is good... we won't fit in the house if it is raining... besides, it would be good to give the new barbie a workout! Late afternoon so that it doesn't get blistering hot...
Hmm... I wonder what I'm going to do about chairs... I only have 16...

Sounds like a plan, any ideas on dates, if you are volunteering your place then let us know what you have date wise.
As for chairs, we should have enough large lenses now to make some make shift stools...

the playground is towards the north of the reserve, and moderately close to the bush/clifftop walks
id prefer 4 onwards too, be too hot otherwise

This is a good point, I am unfamilar with the area, I believe Kirst knew a little about it, perhaps it may be a good idea for someone to bring a portable BBQ if they have one, in case we can't use one there.
somethingsimple
25th of January 2008 (Fri), 04:27
there are bbqs dotted around the area, and there is one big covered bbq area with benches at the far north end, but its not near the playground, and may be in use
klippe
25th of January 2008 (Fri), 04:41
Does anyone have a portable that they can bring? I have a distinct feeling that given the weather we've had of late that the BBQ areas might be pretty busy (if not booked out).
And they might not too.
I'd just hate to have us all turn up with food etc and not have anyway of cooking it.
So, anyone have a portable barbeque they can bring? (pretty please)

ooohhh get you.... you big shot... :p ;)
Hah - Sorry, wasn't trying to be cheeky.
I'm shooting the band either Anzac weekend, or the one after. But timing hasn't been fine tuned yet, so if I'm not, I'll be there. If I am, it depends on hat time I'll be needed in Tauranga :)
No big shot here, just in the right places at the right time.
My stars told me this the other day..
You need to stick it out through the current situation, no matter how much you want to cut and run. Your perseverance will pay off in the long run in a big, almost unimaginable, way.
And this
Let someone else handle all the tiny details today -- you've got bigger fish to fry.
And this
You are full of great ideas and a few of them -- the few that nobody else has dreamed up yet -- will take off and develop lives of their own. You should nurture them for now, then let go.
(yeah yeah - who believes in them, rah de rah... but that's all they've said in days.. so I'm running with it, hehe)
Back to Photography - def there on Wed, and will try for the 26th :D

I want this to happen. 1 Weekend either Taupo or Wellington. July?
Aucklanders chip in a bit each to get the SI lot up (flights) We book a motel and hire a couple of vans (unless someone else has better idea).
Thoughts, ideas, lets get of our a$$ and DO IT.

I've got a free flight. So here to Wellington isn't a problem. Cheap flight back then. I could have a nice long weekend.

This a good idea, how about we start a new thread and set a date in spring?
Base it in Auckland, and we all host 1 or 2 southerners each, as well as provide transport. Make it as cheap as possible so the only real cost is the flights and some food.
I can host 2, if they don't mind sharing a room, and a shower.
I can also book the GKPE bus which seats 7, and there are plenty of other people with company cars, we could be sponsored by a local teleco........

Done and done, one seat left. One issue though, as Telecom is now operationally separated (unbundled), I need one person to steer, and the other one to deal with the acceleration and braking, however we are not allowed to communicate directly and have to go via a third party, which will the the thirds person in the cars job!
Not sure what time to go, I am sure there would be some very cool lighting early on in the day for the brave!

Probably best to meet at the train station. It is a convienient place to meet and easy walking distance to the vats etc....as for times....dunno....anyone?

I thought the ideas had already started a while ago about doing Wellington... NZShrimper can shed some light..
That way its in the middle for everyone really (Auckland and the South Island) and people are not paying for anyone else etc - it seems a fairer way.
Flights now days are pretty cheap - it costs the same to get from CHCH to Wellington as it does Auckland to Wellington...

Possibly the greatest idea...ever. Ok im in Wellington as bias as possible, but using the middle of the country certainly does work well for most. However arnt most members based in Auckland?
July maybe a long while off? June?

Auckland means free accommodation for anyone who gets here, as there are the most members here. Also means lots of free, or cheap transport as we have plenty of teleco taxis and other company cars, and I can always books the bus.
Also means the fewest number of members who have to travel, if everyone in Auckland pitched in $50 we would get most people here from around the country for free for no, limited cost to them.
Wellington is nice and central, but fewer number of members, which limits how many can host people, which means someone is going to have to pay for accommodation.
Also limited number of cars to cart people around etc.
Would also mean more members would have to travel, as the bulk of us are in Auckland.
Somewhere else.
Taupo, easy drive for bulk of members in Welly and Auckland, but southerners still have to fly.
Everyone has to pay for accommodation, and transport costs, but we will have lots of cars to move around in.

i am with this guy on this... ;) - it makes more sense to have a mass meet up in Auckland... (go kart challenge is still on i hope)
That way we are looking at flying only a few members up for the weekend.. much cheaper for everyone... and free accommodation / transport makes sense too...
Its not to far to have a drive out of town one day Tony.. and as for a change of scene - come down here for a weekend - snow is only 1 hour away (well 1 - 2 months away)
