If you use Breezebrowser to convert RAW files, you have a choice of Normal, Linear or Combined. The Combined converstion can help reduce highlights and glare and help with over exposure. Here are two examples of the same image, one converted using Linear and the other using Combined.
The shot was taken using existing light, ISO1600 and the focus point was set for maximum DOF.
The linear image processed using Pekka's convert only 342. Both images were processed using Auto Levels, Auto Color, a slight curve adjustment and Quantum Mechanic was used to reduce noise and sharpen the images.
Notice the reduction of the highlights on the polished metal and the glare on the driver wheels.
