My school newspaper is letting me do a photo essay. I just have to find a topic now. Anyone have ideas? I hope to show different views on the topic that I pick, not just one view (biased) like how some media is.

Thanks.

Wow, that's a difficult question to answer. It might help if you passed along some of your interests. You'll be more likely to put your heart into the project if you're passionate about or strongly interested in the subject matter.

Well I'm passionate of photography :). I just can't think of a subject, don't have anything in particular in mind...

For a school project, fashions would be a cool topic. You could take shots of some of the students and, for laughs, scan some photos from your parents' yearbooks to show how fashions have changed.

Why pick a potential media-biased subject?

Pick NATURE.

fashion is cool, i'd have to find some students to pose or I could go around asking people if I could take their picture :P. Always a good way to meet new people ;).

Nature is a good one too, lots of nature in BC here.
Hmm.

I had some troubles in writing a photo essay in my college. But professors helped me very much to cope with my essay problems.

Do something along the lines of the "Roaming Gnome" concept.

DON'T USE A GNOME

Use something that you can carry from place to place and photograph it in front of various local landmarks. Me? I'd use a large stuffed alligator. Well, not a stuffed, taxidermy, alligator, but a stuffed animal toy alligator. I've seen photo essays doing this with balls of one sort or another or a creepy little doll. The gnome is cliche and droll and done to death.

Holy Lurker Batman. :p

I think fast food is boring. You need something with range that will hopefully draw emotion or educate people a little.

As an example, we did a fun photo essay of a temple here in Bangkok. We got shots of people showing respect to Buddha, the statues, and things that convey the 'feel' of the temple. That is what you want to strive for when doing a photo essay. You want a range of images that 'tells a story.'

For the OP, it might help if we knew what setting you lived in. A small country town is going to have a different subject than a big city.

*homelessness
*problems in ur city (idk...maybe theres a local park being torn down or smething like that and you could take a stand on that..... you kno what i mean...)
these are both good suggestions and leave for a lot of range

You could also do something creative like a guy that took pictures of his feet in all different situations. Like riding a dog sled, skiing, walking in rain, etc... the theme was his feet and where they went.

Great thread you have shared here...
A photo essay is very simply a collection of images that are placed in a specific order to tell the progression of events, emotions, and concepts. Essay writing is essential task in college students life. They need to write essay about all topics (http://www.essayscouncil.com/), the photo essay writing is one of them. A photo essay isn’t simply for photojournalists however. Every human being is drawn to stories. Whether you are an amateur or a professional, the photo essay is a brilliant way to bring your images to life and touch your family, friends, and coworkers.
Have a good day :)

Just to be clear, since I couldn't really tell from the OP.
Are you writing about photography, or is it more photo journalistic in nature, where you tell a story (not necessarily photography related), through images?

If the former, I would start with a aspect of photography that appeals to you (a specific style or area of the trade for example), and write about that.
You could choose a photo, that you really like (one of yours) and write about the process behind it.

If your approach is more journalistic, you basically just find anything that you wan't to tell poeple about. Start with some good strong images, that tell the story and bind them together with words.
