I have seen this type of image before and I'm still trying to get my head around how it is done. I think a flash is being used. I'm not sure how the color tone is being acheved. Any thoughts as to how it is being done would be great.

Looks like simple direct flash to me. I don't see anything immediately unusual there.

Direct flash and levels/contrast seems to have been adjusted.

Yep - I would agree. Either an onboard or shoe-mounted direct flash, maybe 1/2 - 1 stop overexposed, and then contrast and saturation jacked up in PS or some other program. Aesthetically not very attractive IMHO; brides wouldn't buy my work if I produced images like that .

LOL I'm not thinking this is a good bridal look.

I'm trying to expand my Photoshop chops and any shot that catches my eye I try and figure out how they did it. This one looks easy but I have been playing with it without much luck. I agree that it looks like the contrast / saturation has been jacked up but I do not think that is the only thing. I tried changing the low / highlights points and that did not jump out as the solution.

Any other ideas?

Hey! This is the guy who took that photo and all the other club photos! I found this through Flickr Stats...i saw this photo has a large amount of views so I checked the referrers and got here...anyways...

Yeah i would never use this effect for weddings! I'm not sure if the other guy thought he was on a wedding photography forum or something, but I don't even have any wedding photos up, haha.

This effect I use for club shots only. It's a pretty intense effect but I think it conveys fun and wildness...it reflects what nightlife is like. But yeah, everyone always loves and compliments the photos, so the club kids seem to like it.

I use a canon 550ex flash on a G5, and i developed a process that involves the shadow/highlight tool, levels, hue/saturation, some sharpening, a 3rd party plug in called noise ninja, and the high pass filter (under the 'other' option in the filters menu). Not in that order, though :) If you havent used high pass before, it might take you a bit to figure out how to use it, but theres a bunch of tutorials online about it.

Anymore questions, feel free to email me at kcoll98@aol.com or just get back to me on here!

Welcome back! Thanks for taking the time to come over here and posting.

I'm a big fan of the new Flickr Stats and its good to see it has even more uses then I thought.
Thanks for the overview. I'll play around with it over the next few days. I'm always looking for ideas for shots and I like the look you acheave with your images.

I've been thinking about picking up a 580EX II and this might just be the kick in the butt I need.

I kinda would like to meet the bride who would like this look for her images. ;-)

Isn't this the look we strive to avoid?? I'm confused.

Well, I know I would avoid it's garrishness for my wedding and event work. But I understand how it could have a certain appeal in a club or concert environment - just not MY cup 'o tea ;).

I suppose Any exposure is correct as long as it's what you want.

Well, that gets into the concept of what is good photography or art, and that can be a highly subjective area of discussion. But OBJECTIVELY the sample that was provided shows blown highlights and lost detail. So technically that is not a very good photograph. Still, the individual may really like it from an aesthetic or subject matter viewpoint.

Looks like folks are getting a bit picky on this. My thinking is it good to have more tools in one's tool belt. One does not have to use this but its good to know how to do it.

I think you should give it a go. Not on an actual wedding but get some friends, or a couple to give you a hand. See what you can try out.

Yes, guilty as charged - I am being picky ;). I just feel a certain obligation to provide both positive and negative constructive c&c on images that are posted and linked here. That's how we all become better photographers.

My "pickiness" is purely technical. The client could have been delighted with the image, which shows you how the marketplace functions. Bottom line, if the client was happy with it and even gave you a commision, then you were successful (even if there are technical flaws :D).
