Does anyone know yet if the above combo will work (are compatible)?

Sounds like a good extra for a 20D with the EF-S 17-85 bundle when it becomes available, given the 17-85's IS. Only downside would seem to be a max effective aperture of f11 for the combo...

I've not seen the 2x EF II listed as compatible with the EF-S 17-85, but maybe this is only becasue the 17-85 is so new?

Is it true that AF won't work anyway, as the max aperture of the 17-85 is not as fast a f2.8?

I very seriously doubt if it would work. The 2X teleconverter isn't compatible with any of the normal/wide EF lenses due to how the front lens element of the TC reaches into the rear cavity of the lens. Wide and normal/short telephoto lenses' rear element moves too far back and would physically strike the front element of the teleconverter. The EF-S series lens rear element protrudes even farther back and would thus physically contact the teleconverter also.

Seeing as how the mark II series of the 1.4x and 2.0x TCs came out in 2001 and the EF-S lens mounts didn't even come out until much later, in 2003, you won't even be able to mount any EF-S lens onto any of the Canon TCs.

Thanks all.

One of the 'benefits' of the new lens series, then :-(

Do Nikon have similar compatibility issues with their AF-S DX lens(es)?

Wibbly,

Check the "EOS" sticky..

You'll see that only a few specific telephotos will work with a T-con.
