You have to put in the Canon CD before connecting the A40. Install everything. Then reboot and connect the A40.
It should find the A40 driver. But it will ask for the Windows CD. But sometimes the CD ROM drive it selects is wrong, and you have to type it in.
Like it may come up with D:/WIN98 when the CD is really in E:/WIN98. That used to catch me alot.

When you turn on your camera, in the playback mode (blue arrowhead), a window should pop up asking you to insert the Digital Camera Solution disk:
1. Click OK.
2. On the window that pops up, click 'Browse'.
3. Ensure that your C:\ drive appears at the bottom of the screen in the 'Drives' box. If not, click the down arrow next to it, and choose your C:\ drive.
4. Double-click on the C:\ folder in the upper right column.
5. Double-click on the 'Program Files' folder.
6. Double-click on the 'Canon' folder.
7. Single-click on 'Powershot A40 TWAIN'.
8. Click OK.
9. Click OK again.
Windows 98 should now load the software for your new hardware. Once it has completed this, it should prompt you to choose an application to launch.
