View Full Version : I hate orange (10D focusing issue).

OK, I shoot a lot of racing cars with my little 10D. I mean a LOT. The vast majority of shots are in focus. I really don't have auto focus problems with the camera except when I am shooting something that is mainly orange in colour. Then the poor old 10D doesn't have a clue. Focus is all over the shop. I am lucky if 1 in 4 shots of orange cars is in focus.
Is my camera just weird or do others suffer from this problem?
Is there any sensible reason why it should have a problem with orange?

Is there enough contrast for the camera Af sensors ?

It has to be some thing like that... but why only orange? It has not problem with red, black, white, blue, green - pink even. Orange is a killer every time though. :?

Weird. I never had that prob with my 10D. What lens?

All of my telephoto zooms (Sigma 120-300EX f/2.8, Canon 100-400L and Canon 70-200L f/4). The lens doesn't seem to make a difference.
It's annoying because although orange seems to have gone out of fashion for modern race cars there are an awful lot of orange classics out there... real Mclarens for example...

Bright sunlight, hazy or dull?
(If you answer this, I won't be able to help but you might!)

Worse when there's more light... I think.

We shoot with the 70-200 f/2.8, 400 f/5.6 and 100-400. Shoot orange quite a bit...

I'm going to suggest that the AF sensor doesn't respond as well to orange (600-620 nM) as to other colours. If it's less sensitive, it won't see the contrast your eye can, and won't be able to focus. There's enough other stuff in RFMSports' example that it might have been focussed on one of the non-orange parts.

Waaaay back when I noticed that my A2E was colorblind to certain colors. I was told it couldnt happen! Not good enough to convince me the camera wasnt hallucinating. It think that camera didnt like some shades of blue.
The 10D and D30 dont like focusing on silver colored vehicles.
I only have one customer with an orange race machine but I guess I take enough of him that I dont notice the throw-aways.
Anybody else have a color their camera cant see?

None of my cameras can see the colour of bank notes; I photograph my cash box with any of them, but no money shows up! I buy more lenses and stuff to try to get a picture of my money, but it never appears in any of the shots!
Wierd, eh? :?
